  2. STONEWALL MANOR

  3. STONEWALL MANOR FACTS: • ADDRESS: 1325 Falls Road, Rocky Mount, NC • Stonewall takes its name from the heavy granite wall that borders the front lawn along U.S. 64 By-pass.  The wall is composed of huge, roughly dressed blocks of irregular ashlar.  The house is set in a superb oak grove.  Built on the banks of the Tar River about 1830 by Bennett Bunn, Stonewall was the center of a large antebellum plantation.  The Bunn family had been long established in Nash County before Bennett Bunn began the construction of his mansion.  His earliest ancestor was David Bunn, who came to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, from Nansemond County, Virginia, in 1752.  By the time of the Revolution, the Bunn family was a significant segment of the growing planter class in northeastern North Carolina.  Born in the late 18th century, Bennett Bunn became one of the largest and most prosperous of the group.  His earliest major acquisition was Quarter Plantation, which he inherited from his uncle Redman Bunn in 1809. • Stonewall Manor is important for me because my ancestors were the Bunn family.

  4. ROCK MOUNT COTTON MILL

  5. ROCKY MOUNT COTTON MILL FACTS: • ADDRESS: Rocky Mount Mills, near Falls Rd, Rocky Mt, NC 27804 • Originally, Rocky Mount Mills consisted of a grist mill, a saw mill, and a cotton gin, in addition to the cotton mill. As the southern cotton industry grew after the Civil War, the cotton mill experienced rapid growth and the other operations were de-emphasized and eventually discontinued. Rocky Mount Mills was an early adopter of new technologies, installing electrical lights and automatic sprinklers in 1889, and installing one of the first steam turbines in North Carolina in 1911. The company also supported a residential village for employees, which was eventually incorporated into the city of Rocky Mount in the 1920s. The mill was a major supplier of cotton yarn to the United States Army during World War II. The general decline in southern textile industry beginning in the 1970s eventually impacted Rocky Mount Mills, and the mill closed its doors in 1996. • The Rocky Mount Cotton Mill is important to me because it was damaged during the Flood Floyd.

  6. ROCKY MOUNT TRAIN STATION

  7. ROCKY MOUNT TRAIN STATION FACTS: • Rocky Mount, NC 27804 • The Rocky Mount Train Station was very important to the city of Rocky Mount. If there wasn’t a train station then most likely the industries and the city wouldn’t exist. The train station provided jobs for many during the 1900’s. • The Rocky Mount Train Station is important to me because my grandfather used to work there.
