  3. Aim of AICE History The educational aims of Cambridge International AS and A Level History are for candidates to gain historical knowledge, understanding and skills. These aims include: • developing an interest in the past • appreciation of human endeavour • understanding of historical periods • awareness of historical concepts such as similarity and difference, change and continuity, cause and effect • appreciating the nature and diversity of historical sources available, and the methods used by historians • exploring a variety of approaches and different interpretations • thinking independently and making informed judgements on issues • developing empathy with people living in different places and at different times.

  4. Aim of Assessment To pass Cambridge A and AS Level History, candidates must be able to: • demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of issues and themes within a historical period • distinguish and assess different approaches to, interpretations of, and opinions about the past • express awareness of historical concepts such as change and continuity, cause and effect • present a clear, concise, logical and relevant argument • evaluate and interpret source materials as historical evidence and use them effectively. • will be tested in source-based questions.

Content • Paper 5: The History of the USA c. 1840–1968 • This paper focuses on key developments that transformed the USA from an isolated agrarian society to the world’s leading superpower in terms of economic strength, military power, political and diplomatic influence, and cultural and social impact on other nations and peoples. The themes are: • Theme 1 Westward Expansion and the Taming of the West, c. 1840-96 • Theme 2 Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1877 • Theme 3 The Impact of Economic Expansion, 1865-1917 • Theme 4 Civil Rights, 1895-1965 • Theme 5 Boom or Bust, 1920-41 • Theme 6 The Rise as a World Power, 1890-1945 • Theme 7 Social Developments, 1945-68

  6. Supplies • Do not ask me for paper, pencil or a pen, it is not my responsibility to provide supplies to you. If you find yourself in need of any supplies please see guidance or the school store located in the front office before school or during your lunch. • 1 three inch binder • dividers (for themes) • notebook paper • #2 pencils • black or dark blue ink pens

  7. Grades • Test, Projects, Essays and Exams 50% • Class (including reading quizzes) 40% • Homework 10% • TOTAL 100%

  8. Reading • not all material will be covered in class • It is your responsibility to keep up with any and all assigned readings. • Notes from power points, lectures and study. • It is your responsibility to keep your notebook organized.

  9. Homework • Homework consist of reading, notes, and completing assigned work in your notebook or online (TBA).

  10. Classroom Policy • BE PROMPT • BE PREPARED • BE RESPECTFUL • MCPS/NMHS rules apply • You are tardy in you are not seated with all supplies by the time I begin taking roll. While I am taking attendance you will have a bell ringer and an assignment to begin at that time.

  11. Restroom policy • NO restroom use during the first/last 10 minutes of class. Restrooms are for emergencies only and will not become a daily routine (if you have a medical issue please see me privately after class ASAP).

  12. Attendance • This class will move rather quickly • It is your responsibility to attend school regularly • If you are absent: • check with a classmate • check the website • check the assignment box • If you still have questions see me at the end of class • All make-up work is your responsibility; I will not seek you out for missed assignments.

  13. Attendance cont. • If you miss a quiz, test, or exam • be prepared to take the assignment upon return • if you missed the review an announced quiz, test, or exam you will still be expected to take the assignment at the assigned day and time. • All assignments missed due to and unexcused absences will be entered as a zero in the gradebook. • Preparing for a school-sponsored event such as Drive for Life, Relay for Life, etc., will not be excused for any reason.

  14. Academic dishonesty and cheating: • Consequences for academic dishonest are as follows: • automatic zero • parent notification/conference • removal from National Honors Society and possibly the removal from the NMHS AICE program • Students are not permitted to work together unless instructed to do so by me.
