  2. 1 Step – Plan Early Practicum is only offered in the Spring or Fall semesters. • Ideally, if you take practicum in the Fall, you can just proceed to Internship in the Spring • If you take practicum in the Spring, you may not have a summer internship.

  3. 1 Step – Plan Early Plan your courses so that you are done with all your required courses before practicum. During practicum you are only allowed to take one elective course.

  4. 1 Step – Plan Early If you are a non-certified teacher, you will also be required to complete the below courses before practicum: • EDU 4410/PSY 4410: Psychological Methods of Teaching the Exceptional Learner • PSY 4430: Affective Education • PSY 6505: Psychological Theories & Educational Processes

  5. Applying for Practicum In order to start your clinical training, you must apply • The practicum application is required one full semester in advance of when you plan on starting • If you plan on starting in Fall, your application needs to be turned in by finals week of the prior Fall • If you plan on starting in Spring, your application needs to be turned in by finals week of the prior Spring

  6. Applying for Practicum • Applications can be found on CUC Connect under the “Resources” tab • On the search bar type: “School Counseling Practicum Forms” • Applications must be completed and reviewed/signed off by your advisor • Completed applications should be turned in to the Director of Clinical Training (DCT)

  7. Applying for Practicum Students applying to do their practicum/internship in a Chicago Public School must complete all required CPS paperwork.

  8. Obtaining A Site It is suggested that you begin contacting schools as soon as you are notified of your acceptance into practicum by the Director of Clinical Training (DCT) You will be notified via Concordia e-mail the semester prior to your practicum

  9. Obtaining A Site • When you are approved, you will receive an introduction letter that you can give to the schools you are interviewing with Make as many copies of the introduction letter as you wish • This letter approves that you have completed all the requirements and can begin practicum

  10. Obtaining A Site • Along with the letter is a document outlining what is required for practicum/internship. • Give a copy of this form to the site supervisor. • Onlyuse the document sent to you, DO NOTuse prior copies or copies from other students because the requirements can change from semester to semester.

  11. Obtaining A Site Update your resume Get letters of reference from faculty if you want Dress and talk professionally during any interactions with each school

  12. Obtaining A Site • If you work in a school, see if they would accept you for a counseling practicum/internship • Talk with fellow classmates • Contact schools in your area or that you have heard about • Contact the DCT for assistance if necessary

  13. Obtaining A Site • When you have a site that is interested, the supervisor that will be assigned to you needs to complete the “Supervisor Qualification Form” • Forward the completed form to the DCT • The DCT will contact the Supervisor prior to granting approval for your site.

  14. Frequently Asked Questions • Can I do my clinicalsin the school that I teach at? • Yes, as long as you are going to be doing COUNSELING duties and report to the approved supervisor • Can I do my clinicals over the summer? • Sorry but No.

  15. Frequently Asked Questions • Can I do my clinical at a private school? • Yes, as longer as your supervisor is qualified and the school can provide you the required experiences • What if the person who is going to supervisor me does not have a Type 73? • Then the answer is NO

  16. Frequently Asked Questions • What if I can’t find a school to accept me for practicum? • Contact the DCT to see if he/she can help, ultimately if you cannot locate a school, you may need to withdraw from practicum for that semester. You have to sell yourself to the school – Concordia cannot force a school to accept you. • Can I do my clinicals at an alternative school? • Maybe, it depends on the school circumstances. The DCT will have to consult with the school supervisor.

  17. More FAQ’s • Can I have two sites for practicum? • You are only allowed to have one supervisor. If the approved supervisor has responsibilities at the other location and agrees to work with you at the other location it is possible. You cannot have two locations with two different supervisors.

  18. More FAQ’s • Can I switch sites for Internship? • Yes, you cannot change sites in the middle of practicum or internship, but you can change after practicum. Consult with the DOC because the new site has to be approved and the prior site has to be notified.
