    3. WHY HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS?

    4. WHAT DO WE DO? Work with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to help students be successful Address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs Support with academic concerns Scheduling College/Career Planning Peer issues Support with home/personal issues Promote equity and access to rigorous educational experiences Support a safe learning environment Participate in individual and group counseling Overall student advocate

    5. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Requirement 1 - Course Credits: Beginning in grade 9, a student must earn a minimum of twenty-three (23) credits to graduate from Windsor High School. The following core courses/credits must be included in these minimum requirement amounts:

CAPT Requirement 2 –Performance Standards: Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science   Windsor High School students must have basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics and science before graduation. To demonstrate their competency in these areas, students not exempt must meet the district’s performance standards.   A. Definition 1. Reading: Students will read a short piece of fiction and develop a valid and supported written initial response, interpretation, connection and evaluation.   2. Writing: Students will read a non-fiction article and respond critically in writing to a question called a prompt by producing an essay that is focused, organized, elaborated, and edited for standard English conventions.   3. Mathematics: Within the content of the course in which the student is enrolled she/he will use mathematics (including algebra, geometry , and/or probability/statistics) to solve multi-step problems. The student will be provided any required formulas and may use a calculator in completing the task. Also, the student will explain in writing either how he/she arrived at each answer or justify each answer in writing.   4. Science: Within the content of the course in which the student is enrolled, he/she will use the process of scientific inquiry (describe, explain, and predict natural phenomena, using questioning, collect, analyze and interpret data, and assess the relevance, validity, and credibility of scientific information) to investigate scientific problems. The student will be provided with any required formulas and some information to complete the tasks. The student can explain, in writing, the process of scientific inquiry by analyzing and interpreting data and using supporting content knowledge to identify and justify the answer. 1 = BELOW BASIC; 2 = BASIC; 3 = PROFICIENT; 4 = GOAL; 5 = ADVANCED

    7. POST-SECONDARY STANDARDIZED TESTS SAT (www.collegeboard.com) Reasoning Test 3 sections Math Reading Writing Vocabulary emphasized Scored out of 2400 (each section out of 800) Deducts points for incorrect answers Fee waivers Application fee waivers

NAVIANCE A college and career prep program Counselors use it to submit required college materials (transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.) electronically Teachers are also going to be required to use the program to submit letters of recommendation Students in grades 9-11 are given opportunities to access the program each year FREE SAT preparation program Passwords will be distributed to parents soon Upcoming events – 9th grade students will be using Naviance in computer labs

    10. COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY What is it? College Goal Sunday is a free, on-site program that helps students (seniors) and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the form that is required to apply for financial assistance for higher education. It was created to specifically help low-income, first generation, and/or underrepresented students. When is it? Sunday, January 29th from 1:30 to 4:30 Where will it be held? Windsor High School (and approximately 13 other sites around the state) How can I register to come and what should I bring? Registration and answers to frequently asked questions will be available soon. Who should not attend? Families who have already completed their FAFSA prior to January 29th. Families who simply want someone to “check over” their FAFSA before submitting it. Underclassmen

    12. SCHEDULING Begins in January when teachers enter course recommendations into Powerschool. In February, counselors meet one on one with each student to select courses for the next school year. Students are given a copy of the selected courses at that meeting. Counselors work hard to discuss college/career interests in order to assist students course decisions. Course request verification sheets are mailed in April Students are free to make changes to their course requests through the end of the school year and have 10 days from the first day of school to make necessary changes.

SCHOOL COUNSELING CALENDAR September & October – counselors meet with seniors and freshmen individually February – counselors meet with sophomores and all students individually for scheduling purposes. March & April – counselors meet with juniors for individual junior planning appointments Advisory dates (August through May) PSAT’s – October 12th College Fair – October 18th SAT – November 5th Financial Aid Night – January (TBD)

CAREER RESOURCE CENTER Assist students with career and college information using: Interest inventories Skills self-assessments College Searches Various online programs such as Naviance, Career Cruising and College Board College representative visits for juniors and seniors Military and ROTC programs Scholarship Information Financial Aid information Registration forms for SAT/ACT Job shadowing Resume writing Employment searches Working papers Selective service Assistance with class projects involving careers

    15. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS Support and encourage your students in starting the process of advocating for themselves Check Powerschool regularly and feel free to communicate with the teachers if you have any questions Contact us if you need extra support in communicating with other faculty Contact us if there is something going on at home that may affect your child in school Come to our night programs Access Naviance for college/career information
