  1. Prototype testing at CRAL Tests at room temperature in the visible

  2. Tests in the visible and at room temperature of the integrated prototype • Goals: • Test the alignement and optical quality of the complete prototype at room temperature • Check that the prototype meets the requirements before starting the (costly) cold tests • Minimize the number of cold tests • Milestones: • Availability of the test plan (done, see LAM presentation at this PM) • Set-up of the test equipment / benches (in progress, see this presentation) • Tests (scheduled for 09-10/2003)

  3. The optical laboratory at CRAL • Room specially prepared for the tests of the ESA prototype: • A/C installed to maintain temperature stability • Laminar air-flow hood

  4. The optical bench • 3 major elements: • The source module: shall provide point-like and uniform illumination of the object plane of the prototype • The prototype: the integrated prototype and its interface to the bench • The exit module: the CCD camera and the reimaging optical elements

  5. The source module • Specifications: • Shall provide point-source and uniform illumination of the object plane of the prototype • Collimated beam on output (goes to the steering mirror) • Shall allow testing at 0.6 and 1.0 (TBC) µm • Elements: • Light source (source + integrating sphere when needed) • Pinhole grid mask, filter • Nikon lens

  6. The prototype module • Specifications: • shall allow correct positioning of the prototype on the optical bench • shall allow correct orientation of the prototype with respect to the optical axis • Elements: • two Newport motorised rotation stages • two translation mechanisms • mechanical design has started

  7. The camera module • Specifications: • shall allow imaging of all or part of the output slits of the prototype (tests in the image plane) • shall allow tests in the pupil plane • Elements: • 2 different Nikon lenses + one x5 microscope lens • Apogée 1536 x 1024 visible CCD camera • translation stages

  8. The calibration modules • Calibrating the source module: • map the distortion in the plane of the slicing mirrors • will make use of a spare steering mirror • Calibrating the camera module: • map the distortion and the PSF of the camera module • will make use of the same pinhole grid than in the source module

  9. Tests in the visible and at room temperature of the integrated prototype • Status: • definition of the optical bench has started and is fairly advanced • ordering of the parts has started • design of the mechanical interfaces has started Work in progress…
