  1. Hamlet’s Soliloquies In your groups you will be assigned one soliloquy. Large classes will have two groups assigned to each soliloquy. Act 1, scene 2 Act II, scene 2 Act III, scene 2 Act III, scene 3 Act IV scene 4

  2. Within your groups • Examine your soliloquy for references he sees inside himself, qualities he assigns to others, and qualities he attributes to truths of all humans. • For example, in act IV, scene 4, Hamlet begins with “How all occasions do inform against me/And spur my dull revenge.” This statement is self focused. • The next statement is a generalization on man.” What is man/If his chief good and market of his time/Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more.”

  3. How do I keep track? • As an individual and group, you should keep a chart similar to this.

  4. Then what … • Make assertions summing up how you believe Hamlet perceives each subject from the columns. • How does Hamlet view himself? • How does he view men, his peers, etc. • How does he view all humans? Your assertions must be complex. Bad sentence = Hamlet believes all women are whores. A good sentence utilizes a subordinate clause (because)

  5. The final component • Your group is going to teach the class your soliloquy. You should make a PowerPoint to aid your discussion. • The PowerPoint should … • contain your chart. You want to walk people through the analysis so they can annotate their own text. • Contain your assertions This will be a minor grade assessed based on the thoroughness of your presentation.
