California Priorities • Open California NAF Office with a California Director– Berkeley • Strengthen Partnerships with Irvine Foundation, ConnectEd, California Partnership Academies, CASN, Intermediaries, NWW • Open a minimum of 9 more academies in Los Angeles and 17 more in California within 2 years • Complete a Statewide resource mapping – LA just completed • Develop a NAF academy certification and assessment system tied to California curriculum standards • Secure intermediary and industry partnerships • Enhance existing academy performance using “design studios” and additional professional development opportunities

  4. Key Features of NAF Curriculum • At least two projects per course. • Including one culminating project. • Inquiry-based instructional practices that promote rigor & relevance. • Evidence of student learning written, oral, visual, or technological form.

  5. Possible Components of a NAF Certificate • Successful completion of course tests. • Questions: • Should test focus on only “just in time knowledge”? • Should it be on-line or paper & pencil? • How should the test be scored (by teacher, automatically, NAF)? • What level of proficiency should be required? • How many course tests should be passed to qualify for a certificate? • Cumulative portfolio of completed projects for several NAF courses. • Questions: • Should the portfolios be digital or hard copy? • How many projects should be reflected in a comprehensive portfolio? • Is having teachers and advisory board members from other academies feasible? • What sort of training would be required for portfolio development and evaluation? • Successful completion of an internship. • Questions: • Who should evaluate the internship? Employers alone? Advisory Board Members? Teachers? • What artifacts should be presented to demonstrate a successful internship? • NAF Course Credits (number to be determined) • Questions: • How many NAF courses should serve as a minimum for qualifying for the certificate? • Should a minimal GPA in NAF courses be required? If so, what should the GPA be?

Advisory Board Development • Tops Down Corporate Partnerships • National Advisory Support • Statewide Corporate Support • Work with Intermediaries • Work with Statewide Associations • Local/Academy Advisory Boards • Work with Students – mentoring, in-class, field trips • Work with Teachers • Offer Internships & Scholarships • Fund raising
