  3. Italy is located in the southern part of E U R O P E. R O M E is the capital of Italy.

  7. Italy covers 301,230 square km. In comparison to a state in the US, it is slightly larger than Arizona. Italy is home to 60.92 million people.

  10. Values Norms It is common for all immediate family to live together. In some parts of the country, it is also common for extended family members to live under one roof. Italians value family. They often use the phrase “La famiglia è tutto” which means family is everything.

  13. History Timeline • 800-600 B.C.- Greeks, Etruscans, and others settle in Italy. • 753 B.C.- Rome is founded. Marks the beginning of the Roman Empire. • 509 B.C.- Rome becomes Republic. • 46-44 B.C.- Julius Caesar ruled as a dictator. • 27 B.C.- Augustus, Caesar’s adopted son, becomes first emperor of the Roman Empire.

Timeline Cont… • 1200-1600 A.D.- Rome, Florence, and Venice prosper during Renaissance. • 1861- Italy becomes a unified nation under King Victor Emmanuel II. • 1915- Italy enter WWI, siding with the allies. • 1940-1943- Italy sides with Germany and enters WWII • 1946- Italians vote to end the monarchy & make the nation Democratic Republic

  15. Timeline Cont… • 1984- Catholicism is no longer Italy’s formal state religion • 2008- Billionaire Silvio Berlusconi returns to power as prime minister. This was his 3rd term. • April, 2009- Mountainous area of Abruzzo is hit hard by an earthquake- many people injured and left homeless

  16. Current Conflicts • Afghanistan: Armed conflict in Afghanistan • Libyan Crisis: Several military bases at the disposal of coalition forces fighting in Libya.

  17. I like that Italians are family oriented and that they often get together for family gatherings. I do not like, however, that you have very littlepersonal space. I would feel extremely claustrophobic.

  19. Kenya is located in eastern A F R I C A and is home to 43.1 million people. The capital is N A I R O B I.

  20. The official language of Kenya is E N G L I S H and S W A H I L I. However, a total of 62 other indigenous languages are spoken.

  25. Norms • Prolonged Handshakes • “Jambo?” is the most common greeting • Women over 21 are addressed as Mama, Men over 35 are addressed as Mzee • Kids refer to adults as Aunt or Uncle, even if their not really related • Drinks get served after meals

  27. History K E N Y A has been inhabited by locals for thousands of years. They migrated in 2000 B.C. In 1920, Kenya was officially aBritish Colony. In 1952, ?Mau Mau?rebelled against the British. Eventually, in 1963, Kenya gained full independence.

  29. I LIKE how the Kenyans are group oriented and the way that they address each other with the nicknames and such. I DO NOT LIKE, however, that they don’t serve drinks with dinner.

  30. Although both of these cultures are extremely interesting, I would not like to live in either of them. I would really like to visit these countries to experience the culture, but I would not want to have to learn it to live by it e v e r y d a y. I prefer my own culture because THIS is what I’ve become used to and I wouldn’t like to drop everything I know to pick up a new culture. I belong in theUnited States of America.
