Starter • Read the following letter excerpt and answer the questions below: • “and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliar care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.” – Abigail Adams 1776 • What is Abigail asking? Why is the date significant? Who do you think the letter is written to?

  3. Women pre-1800s • Charged with the task of keeping the home running while men were away- either on the farm, politics, or as a merchant. • Women were often the ones diagnosing illnesses and providing treatment. • Doctors would only be called in for serious/unknown illnesses- like smallpox.

This Day in History- an example • September 4th, 1957 • Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas • Arkansas governor uses National Guard to prevent nine students from entering school. • School was being forced to integrate because of federal court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas • Not until September 24th were students allowed to enter the school.
