  8. Freshly Prepared Healthy Food • In 2012, Board of Education issued an Invitation for Bid that called for fresh, healthy food with detailed and high food standards • All meals had to be freshly prepared and tasty • Meet or exceed USDA requirements, including no nitrates or nitrites in our meats, no high fructose corn syrup • Standards were informed by community leaders, including Department of Public Health, and parents • Revolution Foods was the lowest bidder to meet the standards set forth in our Invitation for Bid

  9. Combining onsite meal preparation with Revolution Foods fresh and healthy meals

  10. A Combined Approach • SFUSD has partnered with Revolution Foods since January 2013; we collaborate to offer a healthy menu that appeals to our diverse student population • Having Revolution Foods take care of producing the majority of our fresh meals allows Student Nutrition Services to focus on increasing the daily impact of our meal program • The Board of Education has invested in SFUSD’s meal program for over a decade; shifting to a fresh meal program has helped increase the number of children eating school meals

  11. Positive impact on: • Students • Families • School staff and leaders

  12. • This is the best thing that has happened to my kids in the history of their public education.” • Ellen, parent of two 4th graders, SFUSD’s Fairmount Elementary School 16

  13. “Finally we can feel proud about encouraging the kids to eat school lunch. And they like it too!” • Emily Romo, Paraprofessional, SFUSD’s Sunset Elementary School

  14. In Closing • Students are with us more than six hours a day for over a decade of their lives • To strengthen academic performance we must provide access to high quality nutritious food • Not an expense, it’s an investment in the long-term health and wellbeing of our students and our community • Motivated Board of Education and strong partnerships make it possible!
