  1. Howard Gardner's Multiple intelligence theory: Sharing My Research Journey By Jessica Bender

  2. Where I started? • Howard Gardner was the creator of MIT • There are 8 different intelligences: logical-mathematical, linguistic, musical, visual, body- kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist • Move towards using it in the classroom?

  3. MIT: Actual Application in the Classroom http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073378755/student_view0/chapter2/classroom_observation_videos_1.html

  4. Where I am now? • Have explored each intelligence into great depth • Have researched several different studies/classrooms that have successfully and unsuccessfully implemented MIT… -Positives: makes subject more concrete, makes teaching more effective, creates relationship between real life & math, ensures creative thinking, takes into accountindividual differences-child centered -Negatives: not suitable for all math subjects, time problem, hard prep, working in groups • -Guiding Question: How can applying MI better address a teachers curriculum?

  5. Helpful Resources • Primary: • “Positive and Negative Reflections of Maths Teaching Carried out in Learning Environment Designed Based on Multiple Intelligence Theory” by RamazanGurbuz • “Examining the Effects of Multiple Intelligence Instruction on Math Performance “ by M.L. Dillihunt • Secondary: - “Teach Mathematics: Strategies to Reach All Students” by Joseph Furner - “An Analysis of Teaching Styles in Primary and Secondary School Teachers based on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences” by TajularipinSulaiman, Aminuddin Hassan, and Hor Yen Yi Experiential: The Exploratorium • Experiential: -

  6. Where am I headed? • I would still like to focus my research the effects on the students when using MIT to teach math • I would like to research more criticisms for the use of MIT in teaching math • Possibly see the effects MIT has on students of different ethnicities/backgrounds

  7. Possible Capstone Project Ideas • Unit Lesson Plan: -5-10 days addressing/using 8 intelligences: formally address different learners in my class -Stations • Teachers Workshop: -share experiences: what worked/didn’t work, what kinds of learners in your class? -collaborate ideas for possible MIT applications in your respective classrooms
