  1. Transformational LeadershipIs a process that motivates people by appealing to higher ideals and moral values, defining and articulating a vision of the future, and forming a base of credibility. • A leader of innovation • Questions assumptions & Promotes non-traditional thinking • It creates new pathways in an organization • Motivates people to work for a new and greater good and to create change • Appeals to higher motivation and adds to the quality of life in the people and the organization • Provides energy-producing characteristics that generate new changes for the organization

  2. The leaders Purpose… • To engage and develop the followers into leaders themselves • Influence the way people think to introduce new processes • Change the culture of the organization

  3. How to change an Organizations Culture • Internal Mindset of the people: emphasize free will and drive out inner fears of followers. Allows people to know and trust who they are and where they can go. • Culture among the People in the Organization: The leader has to be a role model for the team. This increases team effectiveness to reach common goals for the organization and for themselves. • Culture of the People beyond the organization: Establish flexible and new ways of seeing the world.

  4. Potential Dangers and Abuse • No ethical or moral foundation • Using followers as a means to a self-satisfying end for the leader. • Leaders who lack integrity rely upon deceitful and manipulative methods • Using power to influence people • Coercive: out of fear • Utility: for an exchange of goods • Principle-centered: based on trust, respect and honor

  5. Examples of Transformational Leaders Positive • Martin Luther King Jr.- became a role model to others to achieve his end vision of nonviolent unity. • Walt Disney- knew nothing he dreamed up could be done alone . He supported and empowered his staff to reach his end vision • Lee Iacocca- Took over Chrysler Corporation at brink of bankruptcy and transformed his subordinates into effective leaders Negative • Charles Manson- founder of a hippie cult group “The Family” in the 1960’s who he manipulated into killing others • Rev Jim Jones- from the Peoples Temple led the Jonestown murder-suicide of over 900 followers in 1978 • Hitler-dictator that led to the ruin rather than betterment of his followers
