  1. Next-Generation Mobility Technology & Trials Mat Ford matthew.ford@bt.com

  2. Agenda • BT’s IPv6 Group • Home Networking and Mobile IPv6 • 3G and Mobile IPv6 • Smart v6 Trial • 6WINIT • Questions

  3. BT’s IPv6 Group • Well-established research group with purpose-built labs and demonstration facilities • Expertise in all areas of IPv6 development and deployment: • Interworking (Ultima) • DNS • Mobility & 3G systems • Exchanges / Business Modelling • Network configuration and deployment • Application porting / development • Involved in a variety of internal projects and international collaborative projects

  4. Home networking with IPv6 • Autoconfiguration • Always On • Incoming comms for remote home automation • Security • P2P is growing fast • Large numbers of devices

  5. Home networking & Mobile IPv6(1) User A User B • Without MobileIP, connections from UserA to UserB have to go via ISP A and ISP B • Inefficient routing • Poor scalability • Multiple single-points-of-failure ISP B ISP A

  6. Home networking & Mobile IPv6(2) • MobileIPv6 provides optimal traffic path • Only initial traffic is routed through other ISPs point of attachment • Subsequent traffic routed directly to COA • Improves scalability User A User B ISP B ISP A

  7. IPv6 in 3G networks • IM domain is specified IPv6 only in Release 4/5 • Are terminals dual-stack or IPv6-only? • Is backbone network dual-stack or IPv6-only? • In time all network elements will migrate to an IPv6-only solution • Inter-working uses DSTM? NAT-PT?

  9. 3G and MobileIPv6 • MobileIPv6 enables seamless roaming between 3G/cellular environment and fixed home/corporate networks • MobileIPv6 not currently specified in 3GPP

  10. Smart v6 Trial • Collaboration between BT, SmarTone and Ericsson • Intended to demonstrate IPv6 applications, IPv6/IPv4 interworking, IPv6 over GPRS, and MobileIPv6 including intelligent content delivery • Support SmarTone in their bid for a 3G license • 2 day event in Hong Kong October 24th/25th

  11. Smart v6 Trial • Scenario 1: IPv6-only clients, IPv6-only network running Quake, mp3, Video, WWW • Scenario 2: Interworking IPv4 and IPv6 • Scenario 3: MobileIPv6 and content customisation • Scenario 4: Inter-technology handover

  17. Smart v6 Trial

  18. Smart v6 Trial • Compaq iPAQ 32MB • OS on Flash ROM • Runs LINUX • Support for WLAN, USB • Developing IPv6 support • Need applications…

  19. WINIT 6WINIT – IPv6 Wireless Internet Initiative • EU Fifth Framework project • 18 project participants including US, Korea and Canada • Aims to build international wireless IPv6 infrastructure and application testbed • Applications: generic and clinical • 2 year project 01/01/01 – 31/12/02 • BT will provide network infrastructure and interworking expertise

  20. Objectives • Validate introduction of Wireless Internet • Based on IPv6 + GPRS and UMTS/3GPP • Validate integration of these protocols • in real applications with complete testbeds • Ensure implementations are generic • Ensure testbeds not too tied to application • Maintain international perspective

  21. Testbed Aims • Carry out in-depth applications in the clinical domain, in hospitals: • Whittington (UK), Tubingen (DE), John Paul II (PL), U. of Basel (CH) • Validate specific non-clinical apps • Road Warrior, Seamless wandering, Streaming Media, Weather station access, M-commerce activities

  22. Specifically Not-Addressed • Redefinition of air interface • Technologies for the home like ADSL • Re-definition of higher-level appications e.g. HTTP • Development of complete applications • Development of complete IPv6 Stacks • WAP

  23. Clinical Applications • Exact applications will be identified during first few months, but may be: • Remote Access to haematology database for anticoagulant clinical management • Ambulance to base communications including A/V and vital data • Remote booking and reservation systems

  24. 6WINIT – IPv6 Wireless Internet Initiative

  25. 6WINIT – IPv6 Wireless Internet Initiative • 24-hour, real-time, emergency tele-consultation staffed with experts in medical crisis management • Using multimedia equipment to assess the remote patient or treatment problems • AV streams and vital data will be transmitted from the hospital to the ‘Guardian Angel’ Centre • The emergency physician will be equipped to communicate with the experts in the ‘Guardian Angel’ Centre • Extend the stationary scenarios to an ambulance so as to mobilize them • Assess the remote patient, advise/prepare treatment • AV streams and vital data will be transmitted from the ambulance to the hospital and possibly ‘Guardian Angel’ Centre

  26. Questions? • Thanks for your attention • Any questions?
