  1. Newark Town Hall • December 12, 2013

  2. What has happened to date • University Strategic Plan has been drafted; goes to Board Feb 1. • Sets priorities in several substantive areas • Relates very heavily to NB but not as much to us • RU-Newark's strategic planning process started this semester • Next semester we will engage in a broadly democratic process built on: • Telling the story of • Rutgers University in Newark

  3. What we have done in Newark • Developed an explanatory presentation for the Board of Govs • Held a series of meetings with faculty to discuss the “New Rutgers” • Held a breakfast for staff to describe the challenge we face • Started the interaction with NFC about building a strategic plan • Presented a vision for a campus to the University Senate

  4. What we have learned so far • Wide excitement about taking on the challenge before us • Belief that we need to be clear about our excellence • Strong sense that teaching must be prioritized • Need to emphasize importance of staff in making RU-N great • Need to build a process that is broadly democratic and participatory

  5. A Window of Opportunity • In New Jersey and nationally, Rutgers Newark is a great research university that is building and creating an inclusive educated community/workforce • There is a great appetite for solidifying the strengths of Rutgers as the state university of New Jersey • We are what a great research university needs to be in the 21st century • We need to grow into our story—what we already are and what a good inclusive process of envisioning our future can help us become • The “New” Rutgers creates a new Higher Ed reality in Newark: • New budgetary autonomy; greater state investment • New Rutgers-Newark leadership • Fresh array of public and private partners

  6. Rutgers Newark as Leader in 21st Century Higher Education • Changes in higher education nationally create • New challenges—but we are already a leader in meeting those challenges • New opportunities to build on our historic mission and our strengths

  7. What’s Next: A Democratic Process • Exploring the Soul and Building the future of Rutgers Newark • Listening Tour • Charrette Groups • Town Halls • Blackboard (or other online) site for communication • Timeline: • Now/January through March: listening/charrette/town halls • March: reports from committees, preparation of a report, initiatives, and metrics • June: reports to Board of Governors; implementation plans

  8. Hopes for this process • Broad participation from all parts of the Rutgers Newark community • Realizing the unrealized potential at Rutgers and in the larger community • Building higher education that works for the 21st century • Telling our story: Excellence-Diversity-Impact
