  1. Community Service By: Andrew Waller Community service- services volunteered by individuals or an organization to benefit a community or its institutions

  2. What Does Service Learning Mean? • The incorporation of community service within an educational system. • A method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service. • My definition of service learning would be “learning how to serve.” After all, most people do not like the thought of working for free. I definitely had to learn how to serve. Reference from dictionary.com

  3. What It Means To Me… • I believe that community service is important for everyone to be a part of. It is a way for you to humble yourself and serve others in ways that most people do not take the time to do. • Before I came to college I always did community service through my church back home. • I did things like help widows out around their house, whether it be yard work, or moving larger stuff that they could not handle. • Now that I am in FYE I still have several opportunities to serve the community. These are opportunities that normally wouldn’t be available to me.

  4. Fall '07 • I participated in a class wide car wash that was in the parking lot of Sonny’s. • I also collected a gallon bucket of coke can tabs that were sent to help pay for a surgery for a cancer patient. • I helped an older lady from our church move from Thomasville to Valdosta.

  5. Spring '08 • I helped unload an eighteen wheeler full of food and goods for an event that my church hosted. • I participated in Kappa Delta’s Shamrock Flag Football Tournament.

  6. Shamrock 2008 • Kf hosted a Flag Football tournament that 27 different teams participated in. • I was a part of a team called the Raging Eskimos.

  7. How We Faired! • The format was pool play, which means that each team was guaranteed at least three games. • After pool play was completed there was a tournament. • Your team’s seed in the tournament was determined by the point spread that you put up (the point difference of all the games that your team played). • Our team had a +10 point spread, and made it into the tournament on Sunday morning. However, we lost our first game on Sunday and were eliminated from the tournament.

  8. Time… • On Saturday, our first game was at 9:00 am, but we had to be there thirty minutes before the games so w our team was there at 8:30 am. • We hung out and watched all the other games until our next game at 1:00 pm, and did the same until our last game at 7:30 pm. • And then Sunday, our only game was at 9:00 am. • So overall, I spent about 13 or 14 hours at the fields, however, it didn’t seem that long because I enjoy playing football.

  9. Practicing Before A Game!

  10. Getting Ready To Play!

  11. Sucks That We Lost :(

  12. What's The Play???

  13. Thanks Kf • Thanks to KfI had a great time while completing my service learning. • I hope that in the future I am able to participate in fun and active community service projects that also benefit the community the way this one did.

  14. In Conclusion… • Community service is definitely something that I would recommend for everyone. • I think that it gives you a better perspective on life whether your helping an elderly lady move, participating in Relay For Life, or playing in a flag football tournament. • Everyone should look for opportunities to do some form of community service in order to better themselves and their community.
