  2. WheN and Where? • Your exam is scheduled on the very first day of exams! WOOT! • Thursday, June 13th, 2013 • 8:30 a.m. • Section 03 – Rm. 505 • Section 04 – Rm. 506 • You are only given 1.5 hours to complete your exam in full!

  3. What to Expect When you’re expecting an exam

  4. The Layout • The exam is broken into three sections: • Section One – Brave New World • Section Two – Macbeth • Section Three – Poetry

  5. Mark Breakdown • Sections One and Two comprise 30 out of the 45 total marks for the exam (Three responses worth 10 marks each). • Section Three is worth the remaining 15 points (five to six questions related to a single poem).

  6. Budgeting your time Because you don’t have much of it!

  7. Time frame of the exam • Remember: you only have an hour and a half to complete your exam, which means that you should be following this time frame in order to complete your exam in time. • Part One and Two • Response One – 20 minutes • Response Two – 20 minutes • Response Three – 20 minutes • Section Three • Read poem and answer questions – 30 minutes

  8. Section One – Brave New World You will have five questions from which to choose from. You will respond to one or two. Questions relate to plot, characters, and themes.

  9. Section Two - Macbeth • You will have three questions from which to choose from. You will respond to one or two. • Questions relate to plot, characters, and themes.

  10. Section Three - Poetry • You will be given a sight poem to read and analyze. • Questions relate to identifying the form, literary devices, themes, and overall meaning.

  11. Example Macbeth Question • Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. – Helen Keller • If one of the themes of the play Macbeth is ambition, whose ambition drives the action: Macbeth's or Lady Macbeth's? Explain your reasoning with specific references to the text.
