Definition: • Teacher leadership is the process by which teachers, individually or collectively, formally influence their colleagues, principals, and other members of the school community to improve teaching and learning practices with the goal of increased student learning and achievement. ~York-Barr & Duke, 2004

  10. Key • The Teacher Leader Model Standards do not advocate onlyfor teachers to be proficient in these areas, but that they are able to lead others to be proficient in these areas.

  15. Key • Leadership resides in the person, not in the position. Teacher leadership is influence without the benefit of hierarchical authority. Yet, it is still leadership, and these characteristics still describe how they influence others toward improved practices that will increase student learning.
