  3. Second Industrial Revolution “Industrial Revolution” video and questions Steel, chemicals, electricity, and petroleum led the way to new industrial frontiers. Read “New Products”

  4. Organizing the Working Class The desire to improve their working and living conditions led many industrial workers to form socialist political parties and socialist trade unions. These organizations emerged after 1870, but the theory on which they were based had been developed earlier by Karl Marx. “Marx’s Theory”, read pg. 620, answer ?s 1 & 2

Section 2: The Emergence of Mass Society • Main Ideas: • A varied middle class in Victorian Britain believed in the principles of hard work and good conduct. • New opportunities for women and the working class improved their lives. • Key Terms: • Feminism • Amalie Sieveking • Florence Nightingale • Clara Barton • Emmeline Pankhurst • Universal education

Both boys and girls between the age of 6-12 were required to attend these schools. Why did Western nations make this commitment to public education? Sports and Leisure….What are some modern leisure activities that were created? - amusement parks - dance halls - sports- organized team sports started to grow at this time.

  7. Movie: Modern Times • Film was developed around the 1890s. Another form of leisure for society. • Chaplin's last 'silent' film, filled with sound effects, was made when everyone else was making talkies. Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (The use of sound in films ?) and progress. The film was made in 1936, but shows the development of modern society. Think about working environment, leisure activities, socialism, mass production, and social classes. • Think about: • Socialism • Leisure activities • Society • technology

  8. Modern Times Using your notes write a summary (3-4 paragraphs typed) on the film and how it ties into chapter 20. Points will be taken away if you do not provide examples and detail!

Section 3: The National State and Democracy • Main ideas: • The governments of western Europe were challenged by the development of new political parties and labor unions. • International rivalries led to conflicts in the Balkans and to World War I. • Key Terms: • Ministerial responsibility • Duma • Otto van Bismarck • William II • Francis Joseph • Nicholas II • Queen Liliuokalani

  10. Assignment • Create a graphic organizer of the countries mentioned in this section. What type of government did they have, political parties, CONFLICTS, and important information given (for instance key terms and facts)? Think how are they changing. • Countries: • Great Britain • France • Italy • Germany • Austria-Hungary • Russia • United States • Canada After you create the graphic organizer read “International Rivalries” Mention in the organizer if they belonged to one of the two alliances that emerged in Europe at this time.

  11. Crisis in the Balkans • Essay How did nationalism affect the Balkans region? How will this lead to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of WWI? Use your textbook and answer these questions in paragraph format due at the end of class!
