  5. Journals • Journal #1 Jory Owens Edge Project: Bantam Wrestling coach Journal Entry #1 March 25, 2014 This week at practice, we had the most kids that we have ever. In both the older and younger kids groups we saw tremendous progress. Also, we saw a willingness to learn. The season is looking very optimistic, and I am excited to see how it pans out. I have been learning a lot about being a leader from the younger kids. It is not easy getting kindergarten kids to focus on the technical side of the sport. I am learning how to motivate the kids into learning by rewarding them by playing games if they participate well. So far this method seems to be the most effective route.

  6. Journals • Journal #2 Jory Owens Edge Project: Bantam Wrestling coach Journal Entry #2 April 15, 2014 Lately kids have been showing up less regularly. Due to all of the tournaments practices haven’t been as productive. I hope that I can figure out what happened to attendance and do something to fix it. This is a great learning experience though; I am figuring out that things do not always pan out just because you planned them out carefully. Being a leader takes more than just planning, it takes enthusiasm and lots of optimism. I struggle with these two traits mainly because I have not done much leading or been very outgoing. I think that by coaching these kids I will progress along with them in desirable traits that will benefit me later on in life.

  7. Journals • Journal #3 Jory Owens Edge Project: Bantam Wrestling coach Journal Entry #3 May 2, 2014 Today was bantam state, and even though I have been under a lot of stress setting up the tournament, coaching, and refereeing; I have had a fun season. I am so proud of the progress the kids have made over the last couple months. I have become more patient than I was two months ago. Also my leadership skills have increased, but they still need more work. I am hoping that I can continue working with the kids in years to come. I have grown to like dealing with the kids and I believe that they have grown to respect me as a coach. Overall, I am pleased to have such a great team, and I am thankful for the opportunity given to me.

  10. What I Learned • In my project I learned a lot about being a leader, but I also learned a lot about patience. These kids taught me more than I think I ever taught them. This project gave me the opportunity to work in a leadership type position. All I have to say is it wasn’t easy for me, but now I would love to do it again. Not only have I grown as a leader, but also as a person. I am glad that I had the experiences I got to have.
