  3. INFORMATION OF BUILDING • ICON • Designed by father of modern architecture, Mies van derRohe. • Represents Germany’s openness, liberty, modernity, and internationalism. • Emphasis on clarity, simplicity and honesty. • OPEN PLAN • spatial planning not from box, but from few flowing independent planes. • fluid, elegant and poetic movement. • breaking up of partitions; no enclosed space. • independence of columns and walls; free from structural limitation. • REFLECTION • Play of light and reflection on glass, steel and the marbles. (Creates lightness) • Spatial illusion created by multiple reflected spaces. • Alteration of general perception towards a material’s properties. (Solid marble appears transparent) • (Click this link for virtual tour of the building) 3 CLIP 1 CLIP 2 BACK TO MAIN

  8. EXPLORATIVE MODEL 1 OPEN PLAN • This model is built to explore possible configurations made from only three simple planes with a fixed plane on the right side. • 90 degree rotation is enabled for the two smaller planes while 180 degree rotation is for the middle plane. The planes move according and limited to the perimeter line created on the base. • Different spatial patterns can be created, while still reflecting on the theme of ‘open plan’. With only few simple planes, free flowing space within can be created. NEXT MODEL

  9. EXPLORATIVE MODEL 2 REFLECTION • This explorative model is to explore the different reflective qualities of the materials used in Barcelona Pavilion and how their placements affect the spatial quality of the building. • There are materials of three different qualities (mirror-like reflective, subtle reflective, and tinted-transparent reflective) for each plane. These planes can be slotted on the base according to the original plan of the building. One is able to explore a particular plane by switching between the three provided materials. The resulted space can be experienced from the provided viewfinder. • The placement of planes can also be explored by sliding. the planes to desired positions. BACK TO MAIN
