How does ENSO affect Indonesian Precipitation? • ENSO SST anomalies in the eastern and central Tropical Pacific cause an eastward shift in convection from the west Pacific and Indonesia to the central Pacific • The resulting circulation change induces increased subsidence (decreased rainfall) over Indonesia.

  3. Java Precipitation during ENSO Monsoon onset is delayed during ENSO warm events. After monsoon onset, ENSO has little effect on precipitation. The delayed monsoon onset results in reduced cumulative rainfall through wet season.

  4. ENSO and rice production in Indonesia Area Planted Warm events: Delays rice planting dates. Cold events opposite.
