The Tudors Work In Parliment • From 1485to 1603, England was ruled by Tudor Monarchs. • Henry VII and the Roman Catholic church fought. • Henry VIII worked with parliament to legalize his action. The Act of Supremacy was approved by Parliament. • This made the monarch head of the church of England.

  3. Henry was always consulting Parliament, as he needed money. • Members of Parliament became accustom to being consulted on important matters. • When Elizabeth took over, she too consulted and controlled Parliament.

  4. A Century of Revolution Begins • After Queen Elizabeth died childless a new family took over the throne. • The Stewarts, where absolutist monarch, who fought against the Parliament. • Charles I was a tyrant. • His Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, tried to force all clergy to follow strict Anglican rules. • The 1640 Parliament became known as the long Parliament because it last on and off until 1653.

Cromwell and the Commonweath • After the execution of Charles I, the house of common abolished the Monarchy, the house of lords and the church of England. • England was declared as Republic, known as a Commonwealth under Oliver Cornwell. • Puritans were people who tried to “PURIFY” the church. • Oliver Cornwell died in 1658. • England went into a Kingless decade. • The English Bill of Rights ensured that Parliament ensured power over the monarchy.

  6. From Restoration Glorious Revolution • After the glorious revolution three new political institutions arose in Britain. • In the late 1600’s, political parties emerged in England as a powerful force in politics. • The Cabinet, another new feature of the government, evolved in the 1700. • Over time, the head of the Cabinet became known as the Prime minister.

  7. A Society Still Ruled by the Few • At the time when Walpole was Prime minister, there was a time of prosperity. • This was not a democratic government but instead a oligarchy. • A society ruled by few. • The Aristocrats had the most power followed by the middle class and then the workers. • There was a very strong middle class, with merchants, crafts people and manafactures.
