Signs Traffic signs give us information about the law, dangerous conditions, and help us find our way. Some common signs: There are four other types of signs: • Regulatory • Information and Directional • Warning • Temporary Conditions Slide 2.2
Signs Slide 2.3 Regulatory signs give a direction that MUST be obeyed. They are usually rectangular or square with a white or black background and black, white or coloured letters. A sign with a green circle means you may or must do the activity shown inside the ring. A red circle with a line through it means the activity shown is not allowed.
Signs Slide 2.4 Information and direction signs These signs tell you about distances and destinations. They are usually rectangular with a green background and white letters. Other signs with different colours guide you to facilities, services and attractions.
Signs Slide 2.5 Warning signs tell you of dangerous or unusual conditions ahead They are usually diamond-shaped and have a yellow background with black letters or symbols.
Signs Slide 2.6 Temporary condition signs These signs warn of unusual temporary conditions such as road work zones, diversions, detours, lane closures or traffic control people on the road. They are usually diamond-shaped with an orange background and black letters or symbols.
Signals Slide 2.7 Traffic lights tell us when to stop, when to turn, and how to maneuver through an intersection. You may turn on red lights in certain circumstances, and if you follow certain rules. Some signals tell you exactly when to turn. Some signals are only for certain vehicles, like public transit.
Signals Slide 2.8 Blank traffic lights During an electrical power loss, traffic lights at intersections will not work. Yield the right-of-way to vehicles in the intersection and to vehicles entering the intersection from your right. Pedestrian signals At intersections with traffic lights where there are no pedestrian signals, pedestrians facing a green light may cross. Pedestrians may not cross on a flashing green light or a left-turn green arrow. Where there are pedestrian pushbuttons, a pedestrian must use the button to bring on the walk signal. You must observe, obey the traffic rules and use safe driving skills to drive through these intersections.
Directions from a Traffic Officer Slide 2.9 In some situations, a traffic officer will direct traffic. • Emergencies or accidents • Faulty traffic lights • Construction work or a temporary obstruction Always obey the traffic officer, even if there are signs or lights.
Road Markings Slide 2.10 Pavement markings combine with road signs and traffic lights to give you important information about the direction of traffic and where you may and may not travel. • Markings combine with road signs and traffic lights • The most common lines are yellow or white, and are broken or solid.
Road Markings Slide 2.11 Yellow lines separate traffic travelling in opposite directions. White lines separate traffic travelling on the same direction. A solid line indicates it is unsafe to pass. A broken line means you may pass if the way is clear.
