  1. Rules of the Road Chapter 4 Traffic Laws

  2. Child Passenger Protection Act • The appropriate safety restraint system must be used for all children under age 16

  3. Speed limits • 65 mph on 4 lane highways • 55 on the expressways • 30 in the city • 15 in alleys • 20 in school zones on school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. when children are present and signs are posted • Adjust speed according to outside conditions • Look for speed limit signs • Reduce speed when approaching an intersection

  4. Traffic Laws • Slow down when entering construction zones • When an emergency vehicle approaches, yield to it & pull over to the right if possible- wait for it to pass before proceeding • Allow funeral lines to go pass you or in front of you (even if the light is green)- NEVER break a funeral line unless authorized to do so!

  5. Yield • To yield means a driver gives the right-of-way to another driver or pedestrian • Yield when making a right turn after a stop • Yield when you approach a yield sign • Yield coming out of an alley or driveway • Yield to pedestrians! • After making a proper stop and yielding to traffic or pedestrians within the intersection, it is permissible (OK) for drivers on a one-way street to turn left at a red light onto another one-way street that moves traffic to the left.

  6. Passing • After you have passed a vehicle by going around it, do not turn back into the right-hand lane until you can see the entire vehicle you have just passed in your rearview mirror • You can pass on the left or right of a vehicle but NEVER on the shoulder • You must always signal whenever you change lanes

  7. Passing • It is NOT permissible (OK) to pass on a two-lane, two-way roadway within 100 feet of an intersection or railroad crossing. • You cannot pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload passengers.

  8. Lane Usage • A solid line means NO PASSING • A broken line means it is OK to pass • You cannot pass in a NO PASSING ZONE • You cannot pass on a curve or hill • Slower vehicles drive on the right • Weaving from lane to lane is against the law!

  9. Turning • Turn from the right lane into the right lane • Turn from the left lane into the left lane • Obey all signs and signals before making a turn

  10. Traffic Laws • In urban areas, drivers must come to a complete stop before entering the sidewalk area when moving out of an alley, building, private road or driveway. If there is no sidewalk, stop at a point nearest the street or roadway where there is a view of approaching traffic. After stopping, yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and all vehicles.

  11. Accessible Parking • Only vehicles with authorized plates or placards can park in an area designated for people with disabilities

  12. Illegal Parking • You cannot double park • You cannot park near a fire hydrant • You cannot block a driveway • You cannot park on a sidewalk • You cannot park on a bridge • You cannot park anywhere there is a NO PARKING sign!

  13. Other Laws to Know • You cannot backup on the expressway • You cannot open doors on the side of a vehicle on which traffic is moving unless it can be done safely and without interfering with traffic • You cannot wear a headset/earphones/earplugs while driving

  14. More Laws to Know • You cannot push/tow a car with your car unless you have a tow bar connected • Operate any sound system (radio, tape player, disc player) at a volume that can be heard 75 feet or more from a vehicle being driven on a highway.
