  3. AMERICANS GAIN CONFIDENCE IN BANKS • The FDIC insured account holders up to $5,000 and set strict standards for banks to follow (today = $100,000) • Long term-restore confidence in the banks

  4. MORE 100 DAYS ACTIVITY • Agricultural Adjustment Act: (AAA) paid farmers to reduce production of crops • Aim to raise prices of crops in the long run • Tennessee Valley Authority: (TVA) Focused on direct relief to hard hit area–put the unemployed to work on ambitious dam projects

  5. ALPHABET AGENCIES • CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps put young men to work (3 million by 1942) • Long term- Men worked building roads, parks, planting trees (200 million trees in Dust Bowl areas)

  6. ALPHABET AGENCIES • PWA –put unemployed back to work • Long term The PWA provided money to states to construct schools and community buildings PWA workers construct a public building in Hartford, Connecticut

  7. ALPHABET AGENCIES • FHA – Federal Housing Administration provided home loans, home mortgages and repairs Repaired business in Childersburg, Alabama

  8. WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION • The WPA set out to create as many jobs as possible as quickly as possible (8 million workers) • Long Term: built airports, roads and streets, and public buildings • hired artists, writers and photographers to create art

  9. NRA • Established “fair practices” and set prices • Established max. hours and min. wage

  10. SOCIAL SECURITY ACT • The Social Security Act, passed in 1935, had 3 parts: • Old-Age Pension • Unemployment compensation • Aid to families with dependent children & disabled (welfare) • Long Term-keep up economy

Success or Failure Successes • Unemployment Decreased • Restored Confidence in the American People • Provided services (ex-meals for school children) • Created lasting public works projects • Legacy programs still exist- Social Security and FDIC Failures • Government too big (infringe on constitutional rights) • Discriminated against African Americans • Didn’t do enough to solve problems • Suicide rates high in depression • Unemployment varies
