AFDM (Assisted Flight Data Monitoring) An efficient and economic solution to the problem of Flight Monitoring. • Regulatory requirements • ICAO Annex 6, paragraph 1 amendment 26 • JAR OPS 1.035 & 1.037 • FAA FOQA • The level of processing of the recorded information is not specified A wide variety of solutions is available: From simple grids of 12 to 20 parameters up to complete flight reconstruction and automated risk analysis.

AFDM: Main Constraints of a Flight Monitoring System • Systematic recovery of all the flight data • Acquisition of processing software • Establishing a team of specialists able to run the software and to remedy typical deficiencies of flight recorders • Transient interruptions • Electrical interferences • Invalid parameters • Recording media faults

AFDM: Specifics of the solution proposed by ATS International • Uses the most powerful software available in the market under an Airbus agreement. • Today AIRBUS LOMS (stands for Line Operation Monitoring System) • Tomorrow AIRBUS AIRFASE • No long term financial or human investment to add to the function of the Flight Safety Officer • No need to buy software • No need to create a supplementary team of specialists The FSO must only receive additional training which is not time consuming, thanks to the tool’s user-friendliness.

AFDM: availableFunctions • Rapid and automatic processing of all flights:Analysis: 4 seconds per flightIn average, 80 % of flights accessible • Automatic detection of operating anomalies: Detection of events, sorted by date and with 3 levels of severity. • Data compression to allow flight reconstruction under an acceptable file volume (LOM files).Uneventful segments of cruise are eliminated. • Means of flight visualizationallowing rapid analysis, by pilots with no previous experience of interpreting recordings traces • Means of processing statisticsto rapidly access significant events and to observe their development over time (reports)

AFDM:Objectives • Once the shortcomings of recorders outputs are eliminated (technical validation), LOMS allows a very thorough and accurate monitoring of operational reality. • After analysis, with pilots co-operation (without any temptation for punitive action and with absolute confidentiality) LOMS permits the identification of actual risks and initiation of corrective measures BEFORE these precursors can develop into an accident.

  6. AFDM: Practical Operations • The company regularly sends to ATS all the raw data recorded • ATS performs the technical validation and returns the compressed data (LOM file), which is directly interpretable by the companies’ FSO, through the visualization means installed by ATS • The exchange of data can be achieved : • Either by exchange of disks • Or by file transmission over the internet • The FSO can thus, carry out the analysis, collect the pilots comments and « de-identify » the data base.He has the tools available for visualization and production of « reports ». He is the sole administrator of the data base which he has operationally filtered Note: The operational validation consists of filtering / eliminating events according to specific operating conditions (example: taking into account a temporary runway threshold shift)

  7. AFDM: additional Services • Included in the basic proposal • Installation of the software, on the company’s PCs • Training the FSO team in the operational analysis • Assistance in the rectification of recurrent malfunctions, in the recorders • Options • Operational advice in the case of sensitive analysis • Customisation of events and reports according to the local operation, after a period of assimilation

AFDM: Conclusion • AFDM provides a deep insight on the operational performance, much deeper than the minimum required by the regulatory authorities. • It allows, at low cost and with no other constraints, the development of a real « Safety Culture » which up to now has been the privilege of large airlines only (Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific for example).
