  2. What is IT Used for at IU? • Teaching and learning in nearly every field from physics to fine arts • Research – from enormous calculations of colliding galaxies to 3D reconstruction of ancient cities • Training for staff from medical technicians to gardeners • Operating the business of the University – ensuring students are enrolled and people are paid on time and correctly

  3. What is IU doing about IT? • Built the Infrastructure • Provided tools and services for the IU community • Educating the Workforce • Capturing the Economic Benefits for Indiana

  4. Educating the Workforce • Preparing graduates for today’s IT-enabled work is essential for the State • IU prepares students with a full slate of training • Non-credit workshops in basic IT tools train 30,000 annually • Degree granting programs in Schools and Departments • School of Informatics • Department of Computer Science (IUB) • Department of Computer & Information Science (IUPUI) • School of Engineering & Technology (IUPUI) • School of Library & Information Science • Similar programs offered on many regional campuses • IT a major part of education in many other areas

  5. Capturing the Economic Benefits for Indiana • IT initiatives have generated over $300M in grants, new funding/savings in the last 5 years • Key Initiatives • I-Light • Internet2 • Pervasive Technology Labs • Cybersecurity • State support essential for first two; have leveraged the second two • Indiana has the workforce potential, education capability and quality of life attributes for IT-based economic growth but needs to provide greater employment opportunities (Energize Indiana)

  6. I-Light • Very high speed optical fiber network that connects IUB, IUPUI, and Purdue University with multiple strands of the most modern fiber – first higher ed owned in nation • Connects all three campuses to the national Internet infrastructure, including Internet2 • Represents long-term investment by the State in research infrastructure • Investment made during good economic times will help retain and strengthen State’s IT advantage • Provides enough networking capacity for the next 10-20 years between the three main research campuses (IU, Purdue, IUPUI) • I-Light2 planned to build on this leadership & success – legislation introduced for this session

  7. Internet2 • An advanced network for research/education and industry collaborators • Implemented by IU • Leverages Indiana University’s IT infrastructure • Network Operations Center run by IU & based at IUPUI – critical funding provided by the State • Recently formed Global NOC – manages US advanced network connections to “Internet2s” in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Russia • www.internet2.edu

  8. Pervasive Technology Labs at IU • 6 research labs in core technologies for pervasive computing funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment • Advanced Network Management Lab (Steven Wallace) • Community Grids Lab (Geoffrey Fox) • Open Systems Lab (Andrew Lumsdaine) • Visualization & Interactive Spaces Lab (Polly Baker) • Knowledge Acquisition & Projection Lab (Rick McMullen) [externally funded] • Labs focussed on economic development through technologies of commercial interest • www.pervasivetechnologylabs.iu.edu

  9. Cybersecurity • A critical focus for IU since 1997 • Importance now widely appreciated post 9.11 • IU has two goals: • “Secure the home front” • Contribute to national security by providing leadership in improving the cybersecurity of the higher education sector

  10. Cybersecurity • Information Sharing & Analysis Centers • Based in key economic sectors • Essential component of national cybersecurity strategy • Research and Education Network ISAC has been created at IU • Research in the Pervasive Tech Labs in advanced network management tools for detecting and managing cyberattacks • Established the Center forApplied Cybersecurity Research • University-wide center • Professor Fred Cate from Law at IUB appointed Director • Established with a $125,000 gift; matched by IU with $125,000 • Hope to attract substantial funding from new federal funds – over $1M already obtained
