  1. Algebra 1 Fall Objective Review 2013

  2. Dependent Variable • The output variable in an equation in two variables.

  3. Independent Variable • The input variable of a function.

  4. Function • A function consists of: • A set called the domain containing numbers called inputs and a set called the range containing numbers called outputs. • A pairing of inputs with outputs such that each input is paired with exactly one output.

  5. Intersection • The intersection of two linear functions is the point where both functions are true, where they cross.

  6. System of Equations • Two or more linear equations in the same variables; also called a linear system.

  7. Direct Variation • The relationship of two variables x and y if there is a nonzero number a such thaty = ax. If y = ax, then y is said to vary directly with x.

  8. Ordered Pair • A coordinate point (x, y)

  9. Slope • The slope, m, of a nonvertical line is the ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal change (run) between any two points on the line.

  10. Domain • The set of all inputs of a function

  11. Range • The set of all outputs of a function

  12. Linear • An equation whose graph is a line.

  13. Sequence • An ordered list of numbers.

  14. Scatterplot • A graph used to determine whether there is a relationship or trend between paired data.

  15. Equation • An open sentence that contains the symbol =.

  16. Expression • An open sentence that does not contain any of the following symbols: =, <, >, , , or 

  17. Evaluate: 7 + 62 3 • 7 + 62 3 • 7 + 36  3 • 7 + 12 • 19

  18. Evaluate: • 22

  19. Evaluate: • -42

  20. Write an algebraic expression, equation, or inequality. • The sum of 5 times a number x and 17. • + ( 5 * x ) 17 • 5x + 17

  21. Write an algebraic expression, equation, or inequality. • The difference of 21 and the product of 5 and a number y is less than 7. • - ( 21 ___ 5 * y ) < 7 • 21 – 5y < 7

  22. Write an algebraic expression, equation, or inequality. • A family goes to an amusement park. Adult tickets cost $21. Children under 10 years of age pay $15. Write an algebraic expression for the total cost. Then find the total cost of 4 adult tickets. • 21a + 15c • 21(4) • $48

  23. Write an algebraic expression, equation, or inequality. • Sue takes her shirts to the cleaners to be laundered and pressed. If the charge for each shirt is $4, write an expression to show the total cost. What is the dependent variable in this situation? What is the independent variable? Create a table with 4 ordered pairs for this situation. • c = 4s • Dependent: Cost • Independent: Number of shirts
