  3. Make an inference. What might be some other differences these people have other than just physical differences?

  4. Not only do these people look different, they probably have different... • languages • history • religions • geography • governments • music • economies • art

  5. These characteristics make up your culture.

  6. Culture is... a society’s way of life that is handed down from generation to generation. There are many cultures all over the world.

  7. Think of world cultures as many rivers. Rivers sometimes flow into each other. This is called a confluence. Cultures do the same thing. Many cultures co-exist in all regions of the world.

  8. There is a confluence of cultures in our world. Sometimes these cultures exist peacefully, …and sometimes they come into conflict.

  9. The Middle East is one area where several cultures exist because... the Middle East spans parts of Europe, Africa and Asia. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism all have their roots in the Middle East. most people in the Middle East are either Arabic or Jewish.

  10. The tiny country of Israel is an area of much conflict. Unfortunately, the cultures in the Middle East come into conflict quite often. There are 3 main reasons for conflict in the Middle East, and especially in Israel.

  11. reason for conflict #1 Different religions The Middle East is the birthplace of three main world religions. Judaism Christianity As you will see, this confluence can cause conflict in this region. Islam

  12. reason for conflict #2 History Israel Historically, Israel has been part Arabic... and part Jewish. Both groups feel they should rightfully control the land today.

  13. reason for conflict #3 Resources The Middle East has two resources that are very important: Water- which is scarce because Oil- which is plentiful and needed the world over, and.. the Middle East is mostly desert.

  14. Competition for oil and water causes many conflicts in the Middle East.

  15. Bringing stability and peace to the Middle East is a great challenge that affects cultures throughout the world.

  16. Many cultures are affected by Middle Eastern events because... we are all interdependent. What happens in one area of the world impacts other regions. In this unit we will be studying how cultures interact.

  17. This interaction between cultures is called cultural relationships.

  18. So what do I need to know about cultural relationships? What are the enduring understandings?

  19. Culture is defined by interactions among complex factors.

  20. The unique confluence of cultures of the Middle East... can result in... cooperation. or conflict
