  3. Universities have been generally instituted by: • Royal Charter • Papal Bull • Act of Parliament • instrument of government In any case with approval of the Privy Council.

  4. 6 main categories: • Ancient universities - between the 12th and 16th centuries (Oxford, Cambridge) • London, Durham and Wales - in the 19th century(University of Wales – Lampeter) • Red Brick universities - in the beginning of and first half of the20th century (Liverpool, Birmingham) • Plate Glass universities - after 1966 (Kent, York) • The Open University – established 1968 • New Universities - post 1992(Wolverhampton, Westminster)
