Learning Outcomes • To increase student staff awareness of the transferable skill set they are building in the RA role or student leadership position on your campus. • To provide student staff with the framework to identify specific skills they want to hone and improve upon in their respective roles on campus through self-assessment

  3. Learning Outcomes (cont.) • To contribute to the development of the holistic student • To assess the skill building in the RA role/student leader position through the workshop evaluation, continued conversation with supervisor about skill development and action planning sheet.

  4. Skill Self-Assessment • Developed to get RAs thinking about transferable skills • Given to RAs at the beginning of RA training • Completed the assessment sheet before viewing the how it related to the RA job • Tool to begin thinking about focus area and action plan

  5. Marketing You, the RA Overview • 1-hour workshop for RAs during Winter Quarter • Focused on skill building and skill assessment for resume • Resume, Action Verbs, Skill Identification Worksheet, Interview Prep Sheet • Evaluation Form

  6. Skill Identification • Brainstorming Activity • Job Functions • Skills accomplished • Connecting job to career (“Words to work with”) • Skill Identification Worksheet • Making it personal • Resume formatting (i.e. programevent)

  7. Interview Prep Sheet • Behavioral Interviewing • Using experiences to answer questions • Organizing thoughts: Situation  Action  Result • Keeping a professional journal

  8. Action Planning Sheet • Identification of skills of improvement – using assessments • Action planning for RAs • Used throughout the year by RDs in 1:1s or as reflection in staff meeting

  9. The Student Leader • Same format for student leader • Job functions change: • Focus on event planning • Student advocacy and involvement • Administrative tasks • Teamwork and delegation
