  3. Nutrients A substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life.

  4. Nutrient Categories • Carbohydrates • Minerals • Proteins • Water • Fats • Vitamins

  5. Carbohydrates Function: Main source of energy for the body Includes: Sugars (simple) Starches, & fiber (complex) Food Sources: Grains (bread, rice, pasta), fruits, vegetables

  6. Minerals Function: Regulation of body functions Includes: Body needs over 20 different minerals There are 4 major groups based on their functions Sources: Milk, whole grains, Iodized salt, leafy green Vegetables, meat, eggs, Bananas, etc.

  7. Vitamins Function: Sustain body functions Includes: Fat soluble: can be stored (A,D,E,K) Water soluble: need to be replenished daily (C, B Vitamins) Sources: bread, fortified Cereals, meat, poultry, fish, Fruits, vegetables, sunflower Seeds, almonds, peanut Butter, etc.

  8. Protein Function: Builds & rebuilds cells in the body Includes: Hair, skin, teeth, and bones require protein Sources: Eggs, meat, poultry, beans

  9. Fats Function: Another energy source and help form cell structures Includes: Holds the fat soluble vitamins Too much fat in diet causes heart problems and high blood pressure Sources: Oils, nuts, meat, butter, fatty fish

  10. Water Function: Removes waste Carries nutrients to cells Maintains proper body temperature Included In: Makes up 75% of the body Sources: drinking water, some can come from foods and other beverages
