    1. TEXTBOOK RENTAL PROGRAM Presented by Student Government 2009-2010

    2. Background Though textbooks are vital resource and essential to our education, the costs are becoming a heavy burden on students. The average community college student spends about $886 a year on textbooks. To support students education, the Textbook Rental Program is one of the solutions. Other community colleges in Washington State have already started a Textbook Rental Program that have been successful , especially Bellevue Community College.

    3. What is Textbook Rental Program? The Textbook Rental Program helps EdCC students to save money by offering rental textbooks at approximately 65% off per quarter. The program is developed by EdCC Student Government and Kelvin Nesvog, director of the Bookstore. To launch this program at EdCC, instructors will have to agree to a three-year commitment to cover the cost of the program.

    4. Progress of establishing the Textbook Rental Program at EdCC Last year and this year, the Student Government put Textbook Affordability Options into the list of goals and established a committee to work on achieving the goal. Estimated cost to implement this program would be $47,000. The program received a $2,500 grant from EdCC Foundation.

    5. The Textbooks Possibly Offered in the Program MATH 80: Elementary Algebra by Charles P. McKeague, 8th Ed. MATH 90: Understanding Intermediate Algebra by Hirsch Goodman, 6th Ed. PHIL 120: Concise Introduction to Logic by Hurley, 10th Ed. Other textbooks you want may also be included in the rental program.

    6. Why does it take EdCC so long to launch the program? Some instructors hesitate to make a commitment to the rental program or are unaware of the issue. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!

    7. How You Can Take Action on the Burden of Textbook Costs Complete the Textbook comment cards (available at OSL Brier 252) and give them to your instructors Talk to your instructors and ask them to take action on reducing textbook costs, especially by supporting a Textbook Rental Program at EdCC Spread the word to your friends!
