  1. Promoting Healthy Foods in Our School Presented by: Mrs. Nidia Mateos, Parent Mrs. Martha Patti Rodriguez, Parent Mrs. Kathy Olivos, Principal Melbourne Elementary School ABC Unified School District

How to Change a School Policy regarding Unhealthy Food? • How to start the conversation? -Share information regarding the health of the students -Revise the existing policy regarding bring cakes, cupcakes, etc. for student birthdays -Gather ideas/opinions on how to change the policy and come to an agreement on a new policy - Share the new policy with the rest of the parents in our school

  3. Important Data! • 23% of our 5th grade students do not eat breakfast • 48% of our 5th grade students exercise less that 4 days a week, outside of school • 38% of our 5th grade students watch 2-4 hours of television everyday • We know that one out of every 2 Hispanic children will develop Diabetes in their lifetime • Many of our Hispanic children are over weight

  5. Sharing Their Ideas with the Rest of the Parents…

  6. Exercise Class • The idea started with a conversation among the parents • The parents shared the idea with the Principal • They discussed how to make with idea happen • What have been the benefits?

  7. Sweating but Happy!

  8. First Came the Exercise Class, now the Nutrition class… • We realized that exercise and good nutrition go hand in hand • Our school and our School Site Council were already involved with the goals for a “Healthier Generation” • We had another conversation

  9. The Most Important Goal for the “Healthier Generation” Movement • “Working to eliminate childhood obesity and inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong, healthy habits.” • All of the schools in the ABC Unified School District are working towards this goal for all of our students

  10. Our Nutrition Class • Together with Mrs. Dipa Shah, from the Nutrition Network, in our district, we discussed the parent’s interest in having nutrition classes. • We now have Mrs. Alma Gonzalez that comes and gives classes on a variety of nutrition topics for our parents.

  11. The Principal’s Role • I am here to serve the parents and the students • It is my responsibility to listen to the parents, especially when they need something and to do my part to make it happen • At Melbourne we work as a team, parents, teachers, and I, so our students will have success in all areas
