  1. CDMA/GPRS Roaming Update Raymond Hsu QUALCOMM Inc. 2004/6/17

  2. Status in 3GPP2 • 3GPP2 TSG-X PSN/PDS is responsible for the CDMA/GPRS roaming specification (X.P0023-A). • Approved workplan: • Baseline by 12/31/2004 • R&F and SDO ballot reviews by 3/1/2005 • SDO publication after 3/15/2005 • 3GPP2 contributions submitted by QUALCOMM: • X31-200404019-035R2 roaming assumptions (approved in June) • X31-200404019-038 roaming terminology & requirements (under discussion) • X31-200404019-034 roaming architecture (deferred) • X31-200404019-037 roaming reference models (deferred) • X31-200404019-036 roaming call flows (deferred)

  3. Approved Assumptions • Support roaming between CDMA2000 packet data system (based on IS-835) and GPRS system (based on Release 97, 98, 99, 4, 5, or 6). • Minimize additional requirements to the CDMA2000 packet data system for supporting CDMA2000/GPRS roaming. • Require no changes to 3GPP specifications. • Does not support handoff of packet data session between CDMA2000 packet data system and GPRS system.

  4. Progress – Slow! • Very little meeting time was allocated for CDMA/GPRS roaming, due to • Urgency of other work items (IS-835-D, WLAN interworking, BCMCS) • Inability to parallel the work in the PDS sub-working-group. • CDMA/GPRS roaming is queuing behind the other work items.

  5. Recommendation • CDG can send a liaison letter to help speed-up the progress in 3GPP2 TSG-X. • Suggested content of the liaison letter: • Approve the current workplan. • Express the importance of CDMA/GPRS roaming to the CDG carriers community. • Request sufficient meeting time to be allocated for the CDMA/GPRS roaming discussion in TSG-X PSN/PDS. • Others … • If the CDG IRT agrees, the liaison letter can be sent to the next 3GPP2 meeting (July 19).
