  3. Solids • Crystal • Particles are arranged in an orderly, repeating, 3-D pattern • All crystals have a regular shape, which reflects their arrangement • When shattered, forms same structure over and over

  4. Solids • Allotropes: 2 or more different forms of the same element in the same physical state • Diamond – C atom bonded to 4 others • Graphite - C atom arranged in hexagonal sheets • Buckminsterfullerene – C atoms arranged in hollow cages like a soccer ball

  5. Solids • Amorphous solids lack an ordered internal structure • randomly arranged • i.e. rubber, plastic, asphalt, glass • When shattered, the fragments have irregular angles and jagged edges
