  1. Multiple Sclerosis By: Kaleb Wells And Joshua Turnbull

  2. What is it? • MS is an auto immune disease which affects the central nervous system (CNS) • People with this disease can live relatively normal lives between attacks although most end up in wheel chairs in the end

  3. Who does it affect? • It affect s women 2 to 3 times more than men • MS is not inherited but genetics do play an important role in who does and does not get the disease • Most are diagnosed between 20 and 50 years of age • More common in the North than the South • More common in Caucasians than other races

  4. How is it an Auto Immune Disease? • The immune cells in a body with MS erodes the myelin sheath of the nerve cells • The eroded myelin sheaths become scar tissue in a process called sclerosis. • Which causes electrical impulses to be slower, interrupted, distorted, or cancel out altogether

  5. Symptoms • Fatigue • Numbness • Walking, balance, and coordination issues • Bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunctions • Vision problems • Dizziness and vertigo • Pain • Emotional Changes and Depression • Spasticity

  6. Treatments • There is no cure but there are “Disease modifying agents” to help with the attacks of MS like • Ayonex • Betaseron • Copaxone • Extavia • Gilenva • Novantrone • Rebif • Tysbri • Corticosteroids (For Exacerbations) • Rehabilitation • Support Groups
