  1. An overview of the wvhinSeptember 27, 2012

  2. History • WVHIN established by WV Legislature in 2006 • Purpose: Promote the design implementation, operation and maintenance of a fully interoperable network to facilitate public & private use of health care information • Board of Directors • Public/Private partnership • 17 member • Finance Committee • Privacy & Security Committee • Funding • $7.8M Office of the National Coordinator • $3.5M WV Legislature • $9.9M WV Health Care Authority • $250,000 Highmark

  3. WVHIN • How is the WVHIN achieving its purpose? • Enabling the secure ELECTRONIC exchange of patient health information through: • WVDirect Secure Messaging • Health Information Exchange (HIE) • Why are we working to achieve this purpose? • Today patient information is stored in silos and access to this information is not timely, therefore providers must make decisions about a patient’s health without the full picture • Facilitate accomplishment of Meaningful Use • Create efficiencies and cost savings within the healthcare system

  4. WVHIN can support your MU requirements • Secure Messaging • Advanced Directives • ePrescribe • Lab Results delivery • Cancer Registry (future) • Specialized Registry (future) • Transmission of Summary of care document • Immunization Registry • Lab Reporting • Syndromic Surveillance • Patient Portal

  10. Improve your quality initiatives • Healthcare Organizations are faced with multiple quality initiatives designed to improve care (i.e. NCQA, Meaningful Use, PQRI, PCMH) • Two key factors in meeting quality standards are reducing unnecessary ER visits and hospital readmissions • Communicating with outside institutions to improve these quality measures is not efficient and often nonexistent. The “transitions of care” into and out of our offices and hospitals can be better communicated with WVDirect

  11. Personal Health Record (PHR)

  12. Other WVHIN Activities • Personal Health Record • Additional Data Sources • Online provider directory with ability to launch messages • HISP to HISP connections (allows WVDirect to connect to other Direct systems): • In the works: Maryland, Florida, South Carolina, Ohio • Review of opportunities for expanded functionality • Expanding and finalizing policies
