They didn’t trust their kidnappers or their food. • What inferences did Equiano make about slavery? (p. 54) Equiano suggests his belief that one of the cruelest aspects of slavery is the way it often tears apart families.

12. Reading Check Questions 3. Why do you think slavers carried Equiano? (. 54) They may have felt sorry for him or wanted to keep him healthy so that they would receive a higher price at auction. 4. What can we infer about Equiano’s beliefs from his use of the phrase “sable destroyers of human rights”? His word choice implies that he strongly condemns these African slave traders, despite their kindness.

14. Reading Check Questions Event 2: The Slave Ship 1. Why was Equiano afraid of the crew? (p. 56) They didn’t look or sound like the people he was familiar with. He had never seen white people before or heard the language they were speaking. • Why might Equiano’s readers have found his reaction to the crew ironic? His white readers would have found it a reversal of expectation for a black person to be horrified by the appearance and sound of white people, who were used to denigrating the looks and speech of blacks.

15. Reading Check Questions Event 2: The Slave Ship 3. Why did Equiano faint? (p. 56) He thought he and the other captives were going to be put into the furnace and killed. 4. Why were Equiano and the other prisoners whipped for refusing to eat? (p. 57) They were considered property. If a captive died of starvation, the slavers lost money because they couldn’t sell him or her.

(p. 57) It was in their interest to keep the slaves ignorant, so that they were scared of the sailors and thought they used magic, and therefore were afraid to attempt a mutiny.

17. Reading Check Questions Event 2: The Slave Ship 7. What does Equiano mean when he refers to the slavers’ “improvident avarice”? (p. 58) If the slavers had been less greedy, they would have put fewer slaves on a ship and created better conditions, thereby resulting in fewer deaths, more slaves to sell, and therefore greater profits. 8. What is Equiano trying to persuade his readers to think or do? (p. 59) He wants to persuade his readers, who are primarily white Christians, that slavery and the slave trade are unnecessarily cruel and contrary to the teachings of their religion.
