  1. USGS/NRCS Soil Geochemistry Workshop

  2. Organizing Committee • Marty Goldhaber, USGS • Mike Wilson, NRCS • Rebecca Burt, NRCS • Dave Smith, USGS

  3. Registration, • Brenda Dutton, USGS

  4. Digits • Miguel Cardoso

  5. Logistics • Restrooms • Coffee Breaks • 10:00 – 10:30 AM • 3:00 – 3:30 PM • Lunch • 12:00 Noon Sandwich Bar (meat, cheese, bread, fruit, salad, pop, chips)

  6. Logistics • Lunch Lecture today (12:30 – 1:15) • Posters • Happy Hour 5:30 – 7:00 PM • “Scores” • Tomorrow (March 5) • Pick up at Sheraton: 7:30 AM

  7. “Recognizing the signal within the natural variability” One of the “Grand Challenges in Earth and Environmental Science”, Mary Lou Zoback, 2000 Presidential Address to Geological Society of America, GSA Today, December 2001.

  8. “Documenting and understanding natural variability is a vexing topic in almost every environmental problem: How do we recognize and understand changes in natural systems if we don’t understand the range of baseline levels?” Zoback, GSA Today, December 2001

  9. Current status of national-scale soil geochemistry • Only two data sets of national scale (1 by USGS and 1 by USDA)

  10. USGS national-scale soil data (Shacklette data) • 1,323 samples (1 per 6,000 km2 ) on 50 mile centers • 40+ elements analyzed • Collected from 1960s to late 1970s • Still the most-often-quoted data set for “background” values of trace elements in soil • Similar data set for AK (Gough et al.)

  11. USDA national-scale data (Holmgren et al., 1993, J. Environ. Qual.) • 3,045 samples collected from agricultural fields in major crop producing areas • Only analyzed for Cd, Pb, Zn,Cu, Ni • Collected from 1978 to ~1990

  12. Bold numbers: Mean in selected area. Small numbers: codes for county average

  13. USGS and NRCS studying the feasibility of a new national-scale soil geochemical survey of the US via Geochemical Landscapes Project. • Oct. 31- Nov. 1, 2002. Initial discussions with representatives from Canada and Mexico regarding a continental-scale survey. • March 4-6, 2003. Soil Geochemistry Workshop

  14. Outcomes from workshop • Publication of proceedings outlining considerations and recommendations(?) for sample design, sampling protocols, and analytical protocols. • Identification of one or more pilot studies to evaluate these protocols and test the feasibility of adding determination of “bioavailability”, organic compounds, and microbial characterization. • Vocal constituency.
