  1. Bellringers Phases of MATTER UNIT

  2. Phases of Matter UnitMonday, October 17, 2011 • Objective: SWBAT describe the four states of matter and how it relates to thermal/kinetic energy. • BR: What are the states of matter? What is the difference at the molecular level between a gas and a solid? • Lesson: • Pass out green picture of phase changes (CHANGE ARROW on DEPOSITION) • Intro to States of Matter notes • Go over pg 78 #1-6 (talk as a group and then share out) • Front of States of Matter wksht • HW: Reinforcement sheet

  3. Phases of MATTER UnitTuesday, October 18 • Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast exo and endothermic reactions. • BR: 1. What does the prefix endo- mean? What does exo- mean? • Lesson: • Notes on exo and endothermic reactions • It doesn’t phase me • Hot/Cold Pack • HW:

  4. Wednesday, October 19 • Objective: SWBAT interpret a phase change graph and explain how intermolecular forces are involved in a phase change. • BR: What must happen to change a solid to a liquid? (write what you know now then come back at the end of class and add to it!) • Lesson: • Go over test(s) • Notes on IF’s • HW:

  5. Thursday, October 20 • Objective: SWBAT- same as Wed. • BR: 1. Describe what is happening when a glass of water “sweats” • Lesson: • Finish Notes on Phase change graphs (and simultaneously go over -It doesn’t phase me graphs) • HW: Phase Change WS (paragraph with fill ins)

  6. FRIDAY • HAD A SUB- • Watched a matter of state and did both green phase change graph ws’s

  7. Monday October 24 • Objective: SWBAT calculate molecular mass of compounds. • BR: How much does an atom of Carbon “weigh”? How much do 3 atoms of Carbon weigh? How many carbon atoms are there in glucose C6H12O6)? • Lesson: • Go over BR • Atomic number, mass • “Notes” on Molecular Mass wksht • HW: Read Lab and do Pre-lab Questions

  8. Molecular Mass Answers Practice Problems: Find the molecular weight of the following molecules. Show your work! 1. NaCl = 23 +35= 58 8. Ba(OH)2 = 137+ (2x16) + (2x1)=171 2. KOH = 56 9. C4H10 = 58 3. H2O = 18 10. CH4 = 16 4. N2 = 28 11. C12H22O11 = 342 5. C6H14 = 86 12. H2SO4 = 98 6. HCl = 36 13. SbCl3 = 228 7. SO2 = 64 14. P2O5 = 142

  9. EXTENSION: • Determine the molecular mass of the following compounds. Be sure to show your work: • Al(NO3)3 • Al2(SO4)3 • 5 BaCrO4 • NaHCO3 • 3 Fe(NO3)3(H2O)9

  10. Determine the molecular mass of the following compounds. Be sure to show your work: • Al(NO3)3= 27+(14x3)+(16 x 9)=213 amu • Al2(SO4)3= (2x27)+(32x3)+(16 x 12)=342 amu • 5 BaCrO4= 5(137 +52 + (16 x 4))= 1265 amu • NaHCO3 = 23 + 1 + 12 + (16x3)=213 amu • 3 Fe(NO3)3(H2O)9 = 3(56 +(14x3) + (16x18) + (1x18)) = 1212 amu

  11. Phases of Matter UnitTuesday, October 25, 2011 • Objective: SWBAT explain how intermolecular forces affect evaporation rates. • BR: Put the following in order of what would evaporate fastest to slowest: • Low Molecular Mass with High IF’s • Low Molecular Mass with Low IF’s • High Molecular Mass with High IF’s • Lesson: • Evaporation Lab • HW: Finish Lab

  12. Evaporation Rates • HIGH EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a BIG change in temperature • Molecules that evaporate quickly will have • LOW MOLECULAR MASS and • LOW/(WEAK) IF’s • (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer

  13. Evaporation Rates • SLOW EVAPORATION RATES will be recognized by a SMALL change in temperature • Molecules that evaporate slowlly will have • HIGH MOLECULAR MASS and • HIGH/(STRONG) IF’s • (remember that evaporation is an ENDOTHERMIC process and will therefore take energy AWAY from the thermometer

  14. Chemical Formulas for Evaporation Lab • Water- H2O • Isopropyl Alcohol- C3H7OH • Pentanol- C5H11OH • Pentane- C5H12

  15. Wednesday October 26 • Objective: SWBAT explain how intermolecular forces affect evaporation rates. • BR: (only write what is underlined) Read analysis question #2 from the lab. Summarize in a few points : How would you determine if a molecule has H bonds? (what are some clues) • Lesson: • Go over BR • Go over evaporation lab • Evap Lab Review Sheet • Clicker/Review • HW: Review for test!!!

  16. Thursday, October 27 • Objective: SWBAT review • BR: 1.? • Lesson: • Study Guide • HW: REVIEW!!!

  17. Friday, October 28 • TEST DAY
