  2. Mission Our aim is toundertake research which is internationally recognised in the chosen areas of specialism and to provide a high-quality, effective and efficient learning environment at all levels of higher education, which is internationally competitive and is professionally relevant.

  3. Education The Department of Cybernetics offers a wide range of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in technical cybernetics, artificial intelligence, computer-integrated manufacturing, computer vision, pattern recognition and biomedical engineering. A new Ph.D. course at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering “Artificial Intelligence and Biocybernetics” was introduced in 1992. This branch currently belongs to the strongest at the CTU with more than 50 Ph.D. students

Research Areas • Intelligent Systems Multi-agent systems, distributed artificial intelligence, knowledge based systems, data warehousing, machine learning, evolutionary computing, intelligent robotics, computer integrated manufacturing • Computer vision Reconstruction of 3D scenes from range images, object recognition, omnidirectional vision, surface reconstruction by stereovision, mathematical research related to uncertainty handling (quantum and fuzzy logic). • System Diagnostics and SW Diagnostics Pattern recognition, complex SW semi-automatic testing methodology, SW development for critical applications, quality control of complex systems • Biocybernetics Intelligent medical decision-support system, modelling and simulation of biological systems, intelligent data and signal processing in medicine,, intelligent man-machine interface, biometrics.

Industrial Contracts - selection (1) • Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee, WI, USA: At least 10 contracts have been solved for the AT Labs aimed at multi-agent systems, machine learning and diagnostic algorithms, intelligent motor and pump diagnostics, expert systems, machine vision etc. • Samsung, Seoul, S. Korea: Recostruction of images. • U.S. Air Force Research Lab, EOARD: Contracts aimed at (a) reduction of communication traffic among agents in a multi-agent information system, (b)coalition formation for OOTW. • Office for Naval Research, ONR,Aarlington: Agent-based techniques for optimization of logistics.

  11. Industrial Contracts - selection (2) • Grundfos, Bjoringbro, DK: Intelligent pump diagnostics and control • Vitatron Medical, Dieren, NL is the leading pacemaker company in Europe. The Gerstner Lab participates in intelligent testing of the SW applications embedded in the pacemeakers. This development runs in close co-operation with a spin-off company CertiCon a.s., CZ • AVX Lanškroun, Czech Republic, owned by Kyocera Inc., producer oftantalumcapacitors. Visual inspection and gauging of the anodes of tantalumcapacitors.Algorithms were designed at the CMP, further development in machine inspection of produced capacitors was delivered by a spin-offcompany Neovision, Ltd., CZ
