  1. Jason Klus Emile Mirzoevs Period 5 MITOCHONDRIA

  2. Structure • Rod shaped organelles. • Two membranes: outer and inner. • Outer membrane filters out large molecules from entering. Formed by protein (porin). • Inner Membrane allows certain molecules in, very selective. Uses transport proteins, specifically ones used in respiration.

  3. Structure (continued) • Cristae: folds in the inner membrane, gives high surface area. Enhances productivity of respiration. • Matrix: contains highly specialized proteins (enzymes) and mitochondrial DNA. Contains free ribosomes. • Some processes in respiration catalyzed in matrix. • Inner membrane space: space between inner and outer membranes of mitochondria. Made of enzymes.

  4. TEM Microscope view of a … Mitochondria

  5. Function • Found in all eukaryotic cells. • “Power generator” of the cell. • Site of cellular respiration; process that converts sugars/fats/chemical fuels into ATP with the help of oxygen. • Allow cells to produce 15 times more ATP than normal. • ATP: (Adenosine Triphosphate) “Currency” of the cell. Powers cell activities.

  6. Other Notes • Number of mitochondria is dependent on cells’ metabolic activity. • First discovered in 1800’s. • Named derived from Greek words for “thread” and “granule”. • Between 1 and 10 micrometers in length. • Similar to chloroplasts in plant cells. • Useful in studying evolution and forensic science.
