  2. WHAT IS COMMUNICATION • The transfer of information(data) from one person to another. • Exchange of facts, ideas, opinions or emotions between 2 or more persons.

  3. MODES OF COMMUNICATION • Oral/Verbal, eg telephone, face-to-face, meetings, telephone conferencing. • Written, eg letter, memo, financial documents, advertisements, emails and attachments. • Visuals, eg. television, production drawings, computer graphics • Electronic, eg. Emails and fax

  16. INTERNAL COMMUNICATION • With people inside the organisation. • e.g. Notice board, intercom, face to face meetings, memo

  17. EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION • Between the organisation and people outside. • Eg. letter , radio, telephone, email, fax,

  18. FORMAL COMMUNICATION • The official communication that travels through the structured (formal) organization. • Is written, oral or graphic communication that follows the line of authority • Used in a professional setting • No slang • Pronounce words correctly

INFORMAL COMMUNICATION • Rumors, statements or reports which no known authority can verify its truth and which may have nothing to do with the organization • Is oral and may be expressed as a sigh, a glance or silence • Used with friends or family • Contains shortened versions of words • Contains slangs

  22. SCENARIOSFORMAL OR INFORMAL • You want to email your teacher to say that you will bring the assignment late. • Hi Mrs. Kim, I will take the homework late because I was sick. I was @ the doctor today. Thx kool. • Mrs. Kim, due to my illness I am seeking permission to submit my assignment late. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

SCENARIOFORMAL OR INFORMAL • You are an associate lawyer in a law firm and the senior partner (your boss) tells you that you have a meeting in her office about a letter you did not write and your suppose to do it yesterday. • You enter the office with the rest of you lunch and slippers. You also roll your eyes and sigh consistently while the boss is speaking and shouts that I was so busy. • You enter the office and sit quietly. Then listen to what she says. You respond with an even tone and tell her the reason the letter was not written on time was because you took your car to the garage.

Explain the communication process and draw a diagram to show this process. • 3.What is the difference between internal and external communication? • 4. In groups of 5 read each scenario then find and match the responses. Identify which response if formal and which is informal. • 5. Role play one formal scenario and one informal scenario.
