  1. World War I

  2. Watch the following video. As you watch it, write a list of the countries that are mentioned on the back of your worksheet. Can you explain what they are trying to teach us? www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfxrTD-kPps

  3. Key Vocabulary Alliance: When two or more people or countries agree to support and help each other. Ally: Someone who is on your side. Draft: Required service in the military

  4. Causes Many European countries had formed alliances with other countries. There were two major groups of alliances. Group One: Russia, France, Great Britain (United Kingdom) Group Two: Germany, Austria-Hungary

  5. Causes Adapted from http://www.kidskonnect.com/subject-index/16-history/287-world-war-i.html World War 1 was triggered on 28 June 1914 by the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. He was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary.  The assassination was planned by a Serbian terrorist group…and the man who shot Franz Ferdinand was a Serbian revolutionary named GavriloPrincip.

  6. A Serbian terrorist killed the man who would one day rule Austria-Hungary. lEt’s Review

  7. Causes Austria insisted that Serbia compensate/fix the problem. What could Serbia have done to try and prevent war? Russia sided with Serbia. Why would Russia choose to side with Serbia? (Remember those alliances!) Germany supported Austria. Germany launched a preemptive strike against France through Belgium. “The War to End All Wars” officially began on August 1, 1914.

  8. MORE ALLIANCES! Later on each group will gain more allies. The groups will eventually become: Group One: ALLIED POWERS Russia, France, Great Britain (United Kingdom), Italy, United States, Japan, Romania, Belgium, Serbia, Greece, Portugal, and Montenegro Group Two: CENTRAL POWERS Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria

  9. WHY Go to War? (Other Causes) Motives for the war included: Competition for colonies Rivalry between Germany & England for greatest power in the seas (strongest navy, trading power) The breakup of the Ottoman Empire (unstable nations) Competition for weapons

  10. The Lusitania U.S. ships including the Lusitania were attacked 124 Americans on The Lusitania were killed on May 1915 by German submarines. This attack brings the United States into the war. The United States sides with Russia, France, and Great Britain. Why?

  11. The Draft After declaring war, President Wilson called for a million men to volunteer, but six weeks later only 73,000 had signed up. On May of 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act, allowing the armed forces to draft young men into the military whether they wanted to serve or not. It was the first time in U.S. history that young men were drafted into a national army. Can you think of any other time men have been drafted into the military? Do you agree with the idea of drafting?

  12. A Serbian terrorist killed the man who would one day rule Austria-Hungary. • This leads to many nations being pulled into a war because they had formed ___________. • The United States joined the war when one of our ships was hit by a ___________ submarine. • The United States creates a __________ so we can have enough men serve in the military. lEt’s Review! http://www.history.com/videos/causes-of-world-war-i#causes-of-world-war-i Video Review

  13. Impact on Utah Approximately 21,000 Utahans served in the military. 665 died 219 were killed on the battlefield or died from wounds received in action. 32 died of accidental causes. 414 died from disease and illness. 864 were wounded.

  14. Impact on Utah Utah’s economy prospered. The war increased demands for farm and orchard produce, sugar, beef, coal and copper. By 1918 more than 200,000 bushels of wheat had been stored by Utah women…The wheat was donated and shipped overseas [to help feed the troops in Europe. The mines at Utah Copper Company (now Kennecott) produced copper and other minerals used to supply guns and ammunition.

  15. Spanish Influenza (Flu) More soldiers in Europe died of the flu than in battle. This deadly flu virus traveled to the United States. There was no medicine to stop the disease. The flu spread to Utah and changed life. - Schools were out for 2-3 months. - Funerals only lasted 15 minutes. - Church meetings we canceled. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbYwNOcKqqc

  16. How Utah Helped World War I helped bring Utah into the mainstream of American life. As part of the war effort Utahns: Planted victory gardens Preserved food Volunteered to work on farms and fruit orchards Purchased liberty bonds Gave 4 minute patriotic speeches Collected money for the Red Cross Used meat and sugar substitutes Observed meatless days Knitted socks, afghans, shoulder wraps, wove rugs Made posters Stopped teaching German in some schools.  WHY?

  17. It Ends! On November 11, 1918 an armistice was declared. The Allied Powers won the war and the road to recovery was to begin.

  18. Digging Deeper • Where have you seen alliances formed in books you’ve read or movies you’ve seen? • What are the benefits of forming alliances? • What are some negative aspects of forming alliances?
