  13. ENGINEERING RESEARCH UNIT • 4 SCIENTISTS • MISSION: DEVELOP TECHNOLOGY TO MEASURE AND MAINTAIN GRAIN QUALITY • OPERATE 50,000 bu (700 metric ton) GRAIN ELEVATOR

  14. Grain Handling and Storage • Identity preservation of crops (separate high value from low value, segregate GMO’s, etc) • Coordinating ARS-University-Regulatory Agency study to determine shrinkage of grain due to moisture loss during storage, which is essential for determining value and volume of storage

  15. SODIUM HYDROXIDE TEST FOR WHEAT COLOR HWW:HRW MIXTURE Jagger HRW After NaOH Before NaOH After NaOH Before NaOH Used widely in KS in 2001 because environmental conditions resulted in white wheat appearing similar to red wheat

  16. SINGLE KERNEL CHARACTERIZATION SYSTEM WHEAT KERNEL • HARDNESS • DIAMETER • WEIGHT • MOISTURE Adopted as Hardness Standard World Wide

  17. ADDED NIR • COLOR • INFESTATION • HEALTH • QUALITY In 2001, developed NIR technology for detecting aflatoxin and fumonisin in corn, and vitreousness and heat damage in wheat

  18. High Speed Sorting Research • Collaborative research with Satake Corp. • Can sort single kernels at 10 tons/hr • Currently sorting breeder samples to purify early generation samples based on color • Used to detect karnal bunt in samples from quarantined areas

  19. GRAIN QUALITY & STRUCTURE RESEARCH UNIT • 7 SCIENTISTS • MISSION:MEASURE GRAIN CHARACTERISTICS AND COMPONENTS THAT DETERMINE QUALITY

  20. HARD WINTER WHEAT QUALITY LABORATORY ACTIVITIES1937 • QUALITY ANALYSIS OF >5000 SAMPLES PER YEAR (Data provided in Relational Database) • DETERMINE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON QUALITY • U.S. WHEAT ASSOCIATES OVERSEAS VARIETY ANALYSIS PROJECT

  21. NEW SORGHUM POSITION • Kansas is number 1 producer of sorghum in U.S. • Most sorghum grown in the U.S. is used for animal feed • New position is to find new end uses for sorghum, particularly products for human consumption, to increase market

  22. FATE OF TRANSGENIC DNA DURING BREADMAKING Mixing (22oC) Ferment (30oC) Baking (218oC) Storage (22oC) M D pu pf pn 5’ 10’ 15’ Br 1d 3d 5d (kb) 12 6 3 1.6 1 0.5 M= DNA size Markers, D= dough, pu= punch, pf= proof, pn= pan, Br= bread

  23. PLANT SCIENCE & ENTOMOLOGY RESEARCH UNIT • 6 SCIENTISTS • MISSION:DEVELOP DISEASE- AND INSECT-RESISTANT WHEAT AND ALFALFA

  24. NEW MOLECULAR GENOTYPING LAB • FIND MOLECULAR MARKERS FOR PEST RESISTANCE AND QUALITY TRAITS

  25. HESSIAN FLY CONTROL PROGRAM • Conduct varietal tests with breeders

  26. Karnal bunt: A major threat to the U.S. wheat industry • Using traditional and biotech methods to develop U.S. wheat varieties resistant to Karnal bunt (KB). • Tested 300 U.S. winter wheat lines in India for resistance to KB. • Need level 3 containment facility for research on KB. • Identified DNA markers linked to a wheat gene for partial resistance to KB. • 50% of KS wheat crop is exported, with a value of $0.5 billion. Loss of exports due to KB is serious financial threat.

  27. WIND EROSION RESEARCH UNIT • 4 SCIENTISTS • MISSION: CONTROL WIND EROSION OF THE SOIL

  28. DEVELOPMENT OF THE WIND EROSION PREDICTION SYSTEM (WEPS) • Allows Farmer to Select Most Effective Erosion Controls Methods Using a PC • Modified for NRCS (CRP lands coming back into production), DoD (training lands), and EPA (particulate standards)

  29. Tool for Measuring Soil Roughness
