  2. Essential Question • How did the Aswan High Dam affect the Nile River, and Egypt today? N

  3. Facts • The Aswan Dam was thought up in the 1950’s by President Gamal Abdel Nasser • It was completed in 1968 • Waters building up behind the dam formed a Lake Nasser • Took over 10 years to build

  4. PositiveBenefits • Controls Egypt’s annual floodwaters, enabling farmers to grow crops all year long • Makes irrigation easier • Produces hydroelectric power • Makes boat travel easier on the Nile

  5. Negative Effects • Traps silt from the river in Lake Nasser. • The Nile Valley no longer gets its natural fertilizer. • Water from the Mediterranean creeps upstream. • The Mediterranean coast is eroding away. • Many important archaeological sites are now under water.
