Aswan dam

Aswan Dam

  • A large dam constructed across the Nile River

  • Reasons

    • The aim of this water project was to prevent the river's flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture.

      • Floods used to be good, but as more people moved to the area, they needed to be controlled.


Aswan low dam

Aswan Low Dam

  • Original dam was built in 1899 and raised three times.


Aswan high dam

  • The High Dam replaced the Low Dam in 1970

Monument commemorating the Russian and Egyptian friendship after Russia helped Egypt finance the new dam construction.


Benefits

  • Flood control

  • Hydroelectric production

  • Water conservation


Drawbacks

Drawbacks

  • Over 90,000 Nubians were displaced

    • In fact, they were relocated almost 400 miles away

  • Those down river of the dam do not have access to the water they always used to

  • It has impacted area wildlife

  • Ancient sites and a temple of the Nubians had to be removed and relocated
