  1. Effort underway to upgrade quality of airborne measurements of visible and IR broadband irradiance (upward and downward looking) • TDF-sponsored project includes design of a stabilized platform for visible sensors to eliminate errors introduced by aircraft attitude changes • Next steps are to purchase additional pyranometers and pyrgeometers for both aircraft; test and build stabilized platform • Routine measurement of upwelling and downwelling solar and terrestrial radiation has potential application to climate studies (e.g., cloud forcing, water vapor as a greenhouse gas), parameterization and validation of GCM radiative component.   2. Spatial Variation of Vertical Temperature Structure • Microwave Temperature Profiler data available from 5 HIPPO campaigns at ~15 sec intervals • Potential to quantify small scale variations from north pole to south pole in each season • Cost is primarily labor • Potential users include HIPPO PIs
