Some background……… • 86% of students achieved 5 or more A* to C last year, 64% including English and Maths. • The national picture is changing and examinations are becoming more challenging. • We want every child to achieve in school in every subject they take. • We want to prepare them for life beyond Boswells.

  4. What is changing…… • GCSEs and BTECs are becoming more rigorous. • GCSE/A-level examinations can only be taken in the summer – apart from E & M GCSE resits in November. • Early entry is discouraged (unless the student is ready). • Students must stay in education until at least their 18th birthday. • Some (if not all) A-levels are likely to be stand alone qualifications by September 2015.

  5. English Approximately 90% of students take the Double Award GCSE (Language and Literature), the remainder take Single Award English Examination Board: AQA 60% Examination 40% Controlled Assessment

English Controlled Assessment • Majority of English Language CA completed in Year 10 • Critical to achieve well (worth 40%) • One piece at the end of each half-term (the first piece is currently in progress) • Under controlled conditions • No scope for improvement, so important to get it right first time.

  7. Mathematics All students will take Mathematics GCSE 2 Examinations (non-calculator & calculator paper) No controlled assessment Half-termly assessments measure progress but do not count for the actual examination Examination Board: Edexcel

  8. Science • Triple Science (chosen at Options) Examination Board: OCR • Double Science (sets 1 & 2) Examination Board: OCR • BTEC Science (sets 3 & 4) Examination Board: Edexcel

  9. Triple Science Separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics 1 piece of Controlled Assessment for each subject (worth 25%) All examinations now take place at the end of Year 11

  10. Double Science • Core Science in Year 10 (1 GCSE) • Additional Science in Year 11 (1 GCSE) 2 pieces of controlled assessment (worth 25% in total) First piece straight after half-term (lasts two weeks) Examination for Core at the end of Year 10.

  11. BTEC Science • Principles of Science in Year 10 • Applications of Science in Year 11 Each qualification is equivalent to 1 GCSE 75% classroom based assessment 25% examination (March or June)

  15. Controlled Assessment • Classroom-based assessment under controlled conditions. • Attendance and preparation are crucial. • Should be aiming to achieve at least in line with overall grade. • Cannot be improved, but a different piece can completed.

Next Steps The Boswells College Entry Requirements for A-levels (in general)….. 6 A* to C grades (or equivalent) Subject Specific Requirements (most likely a grade B in that subject at GCSE) (Other Colleges are available!) College Open Evenings mostly take place in the autumn term of Year 11 (early research helps).
